Topamax Sprinkles

Fri, 06/22/2007 - 23:30
Hi all-- I have a quick question. My 4-year-old son has Lennox-Gastaut and is on 85mg of Lamictal. We are trying to bring him up to 90mg of Topamax a day (in addition to the Lamictal), but he does not like the Topamax sprinkles. The only thing he will take it on are cupcakes that already have the regular sugar sprinkles. I have tried applesauce, ice cream, and whipped cream, but he spits the sprinkles out. I think it's the grainy texture that bothers him. Does anyone have any ideas about what else would work? I'm hoping I can find something that is a bit more healthier than cupcakes. Thanks for your help.

I know this might sound silly but how about putting some icing on a spoon, then the Topamax and then a few sprinkles on top of that or maybe putting the sugar sprinkles in with the applesauce. My son is 2 and takes 75 mg's 3 times a day and right now he is good with it in baby food fruit. Good luck, I might write down other suggestions and save them for when ds gives me trouble taking his meds. Take care, Paws

my 14 month old use to take the topamax sprinkles but then they started coming out in her stool so we switched her to the topamax tablet it is very small and was easy to hide in a spoon of pudding now I dont know if this would work with a 4 year old but it could be worth a try (the tabs are 25mg each but can be cut in half but should not be crushed due to the bitter taste). good luck

My daugther is the same way but with the Zonegran when we put it on food. We have found the only thing that she really will take it with is frosting and it's not healthy but at the same time it makes her take her medicine without any fight. Have you ever tried Ice Cream? That's another thing that worked pretty well for us, they also make dippin' dots style ice cream that they sell in the stores that works pretty well to get her to take her medicine. She doesn't like ice cream right now so we are doing the frosting. Good luck!
