Testing Options for our Little Guy

Thu, 05/22/2014 - 01:21

Hello, we're new here and would so appreciate some advice. Our 3 year old is scheduled for an EEG in a week. We live 55 minute drive from the facility (we live in the boonies).  The directions are to keep him up till midnight and then let him sleep and wake him at 3am. And then keep him awake until the appt at 845am.

I was told by the scheduler that if he has nodded off- the test will be cancelled.

I honestly can not figure out how we're supposed to pull this off. There is no way he is not going to fall asleep on the drive.

Are there other options? Is there something else I can ask for (a different way to administer the EEG) or do you have any suggestions for how to do this? Your help is very appreciated.

Hi Charise,Wow, I can't even recall how I made it through that last year, I was a zombie. They suggested 24hour stores as one way to keep kids awake but think we just had new toys, movies (with dancing) and apps to keep her up. Still, seems like tad bit more sleep deprivation than we did last year for then 6yo. I thought it was a bust but they really did see something during sleep. Can one of you drive while the other keeps child awake/engaged? Is it worth getting a room near the hospital? The different way to do an EEG is doing it at home, look into ambulatory EEG (one drawback is if leads come off, don't know others, haven't done that), and inpatient (which insurance might not preapprove before trying other options).
