Sorry, but just had to share my good news!

My 22yr old son has just brought us great news. He is going to make his 4yr old brother an uncle. Although I am over the moon for him and his partner, It will take a bit of getting used to - being called granny!lol A horrible thought has just crossed my mind. Could his little baby be at risk of E due to Thomas being diagnosed with MAE?

Congrats! Am I getting it right that your son's signif' other is expecting, and it is your son who has E? If you're that worried, at this stage about all you can do is suggest an amino sooner than later. I know if my boyfriend & I ever have kids that's one thing they've told us, since I'm the epileptic one. (we're common-law, actually going to go thru genetics counselling - I want that issue settled before we do get married, watched a great friend's marriage almost end over issue of kids). Not sure what trimester your son's signif. other is in, but folic acid, I'd really recommend it. Apparently I have to take 3x the amount a person without E does, and I'm supposed to start that 6 mths before we plan on having kids (from what my neuro tells me -- we're still about 2 yrs away) If this helps you at all, I have an older brother who doesn't have E (I'm the only one in my fam., lucky me!), and on his wife's side there was no one. They went through genetic counselling. For the 2 of them, I'm pretty sure they got told there was a 3-4% chance of a child developing E. Their almost 5 & almost 3 yr old girls are fine to date. Happy, and healthy. I'm pretty sure the genetics guy did tell my brother that without considering the other side, to tell me that odds for me were higher, but fairly low (something like 6-10%) -- they told my brother that incase I was ever curious. I've done a tonn of research on the topic myself, and most women I know say the same thing - worry more about getting a high risk OBGYN if need be, and then it isn't the possibility of E, it's the birth defects from seizure meds (but again, that's more common if it's the pregnant woman taking the meds). All you can do is hope for the best & love your grand child no matter what! ~ Congrats!! p.s. and if this seems scattered, just woke up...think I phased out for a bit in there tonight.

Congratulations!! I know you and your family are very excited. I inherited my Epilepsy from my mother's side. Her great-grandmother's twin sister died due to Epilepsy (no treatment back then), but my dad has an aunt on his side that has Epilepsy. We discussed this with my doctor. I assumed I got a double dose of it being on both sides. He informed us that the mother is the carrier and that my dad's side had nothing to due with it. I was worried that if I had kids, that my kids would have Epilepsy. He also told us that I could have a child with Epilepsy or not and so could my sisters or their children. I would definately have your son and the baby's mother go to a doctor and discuss this furhter.Especially, if this is a big concern. It might just ease your mind. Good luck to you and your family!
