Should we retry Keppra?

Mon, 10/20/2014 - 14:49

My 10 year old son was on Keppra for a few years following major brain surgery. When he was 7, a 48-hour EEG found no seizure activity so we took him off Keppra at his doctor's suggestion. We quickly saw a couple seizures but then didn't see many more until 2 years ago. That summer he began having many more CPs but they stopped when the warm weather stopped. We've been seeing a seizure or two each week for about 2 years now and have not opted to start medication again.

Recently, he's been having more seizures and they've become more complicated. Some of his seizures now act like night terrors during the day and they last quite awhile. We're realizing it might be time for meds again. The thing holding us back is that, after stopping Keppra, it was as if we got out boy back. He was so much more engaged with the world and enthusiastic. He laughed longer and harder and seemed to learn things faster as well.

We're wondering if others have seen this type of "muting" of personality on Keppra (though we had the rage in the beginning as well) and if there's a much better drug for controlling kids' complex partial seizures.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Carolyn
