sharp pains in head

Wed, 07/11/2007 - 22:18
Over the last month or so my Daughter has been complaining of sharp pains in the left side of her head. She always holds her ear when its real bad.At first I thought with summer being here that maybe she was getting swimmers ear or a ear infection. The last two weeks I have really paid more attention to this. She mostly complains at night and it is always the left side.It gets bad enough to make her cry and seems to go away with in a half hour.Does anyone know if this is seizure related? We are in the process of switching meds so she has gone from 750mgs of trileptal a day to 300 mgs a day.

My 11 year old son gets bad pain in his eye and stomach relatively frequently. His pain also can be strong enough to make him cry at times. We've addressed with the doctor and he says it could be seizure related, but would have to catch it on an eeg to know for sure. My husband and I feel pretty confident that in our son's case it is related to his seizure disorder. He had his first known seizure at age 8, but the eye and stomach pain have been going on since he was about 3 and it pretty much always follows the same patterns and is always in his left eye. He has temporal lobe epilepsy. There is an abnormality on the right side of his brain so it is usually the left side of his body that is affected when he has a seizure. Good luck to you and your family.

Thank you so much for your comment. Your child is having the EXACT same syptoms that my son has been having. I thought that it may have been the summer heat making him have headaches. I thought that it could have been bright light, migraines anything. I took him to the doctor today and he has seizure activity on his right temporal lobe. It broke my heart because I thought that seizures were painless. We had a 48 digitrace done which is a take home EEG and it came back that he was having seizure activity. He was taken off of Keppra 110 mg a day and he began to have this happen. Ask your neurologists about a long-term EEG.
