Searching for advice on how to handle middle school and epi

Wed, 01/28/2015 - 13:10

I'd love to hear how everyone handles school issues.  My daughter is now an 8th grader and is struggling this year.  She missed a lot of days last year and we are on track to miss an equivalent amount, if not more, this year.  She misses mainly because she is having breakthroughs...we call them shakes.  She has Juvenile Myoclonic so mostly she has myoclonic but some absence, and rare tonic clonic.  When she has the breakthroughs, she is dizzy and gets a headache.  You can just look at her and tell she isn't firing on all cylinders.  She had a med change around Halloween.  That did not go well.  She missed an entire week then...in addition to the many days that I've had to go pick her up from the nurse's office because she's had breakthroughs.  (She has had 2 tonic clonic seizures while at school, so they are always anxious to send her home if it looks like she may be headed toward more than just a few shakes.  I've got no problem with that.)  I am looking for advice on how folks handle the missed school and maintain grades.  I feel like I am constantly hounding her about whether this or that has been made up.  Some teachers are good about it and others...not so much.  It seems we are constantly tweaking her dose up.  She takes Topamax and the 2nd drug that was added at Halloween was Vimpat.  That was a disaster.  She was like a zombie.  She was then taken off that and put on Lamictal.  We just kicked the Lamictal dose up to 200mg/day last Friday.  If there is a resource you'd recommend, some thoughts on how to handle the missed work, and any other insight, I'd love to hear it.  I know I can't be the only one feeling this frustration.
