School is too hard!

My dd was four when she was diagnosed. We treated her with Lamictal right away. She has multiple multiple generalized and absence seizures. The Lamictal has controlled the generalized seizures. We just started on Trileptol to help control the absence and I do not think it is working. She also has ADD and is on Daytrana. This year first grade is very hard for her. Her twin brother is in her class and really helps her out with different things. It is so frustrating to me to see her not understanding what is going on around her. She seems to live in a DAZE. I wonder how much of it is the meds and how much of it her seizures. Tomorrow I am adding medical to her IEP to get some extra help at school. Has anyone been through anything like this? I cry and cry and wonder what else I can do to help her. Please help, I am lost.

Hopefulmom, I alos have a daughter who was diagnosed with E. She was started on trileptal last feb. it really helped her simple partial seizures and she has not had a grand mal since, but now we are experience absence seizures. and I think it is affecting her learning also. I have seen my daughter go from someone at the top of her class to a child who is struggling to get by. have you talked to her neuro about this? maybe they can try a different med or lower her dose. I am like you, I do cry alot, and wonder what I can do to help. the best thing we can do is be there for our kids and love them lots. Mom to Lauren age 9,

She also has a bit of ADD ,her neuro got her on strattera and it has made adifference her grades went up . She was on trileptol before too .As I said she is now on lamictal and keppra for her seizures and she takes Strattera it helped her to pay attention alittle better.

First I'd like to know a little more about her IEP. If she has a good IEP, it would already be helping with the issues that she is struggling with. It also might be that she isn't one that the ADD medications is going to help. My 15 year old son, is one that the medicines made the seizures worse. He isn't now on any medicine for ADD, but on three different medicines for seizures. You might also need to see if its possible that she is experiencing absence seizures instead of ADD, which if that is the case the daytrona isn't going to do her much good. So I would talk to her neuro about this too. Also have her teacher, keep a detailed log as to what she is missing in class. Donna
