Relationships and Keppra.

Thu, 02/26/2015 - 19:20

Hi everyone.

I had dated someone with epilepsy for almost three years. Recently, we broke up, and it was awful. For the first two years of our relationship, we were happy, loving, mutually respectful. In the last year, he became angry, bitter and odd. I saw my partner change quite a lot. He became paranoid, PARANOID. Angry. Lots of social phobias, said hurtful things. This all started after a cluster of tonic clonic seizures where he hit his head a couple times (to the point where he has a permanent knot) and they put him on keppra. He started devloping really odd paranoias about other people, and felt the need to carry firearms with him anywhere he went. Things got really difficult, he pushed me away and I became a sad sack that didn't do anything anymore. We had not spoken for two months after we broke up, and in that time I was convinced by others he was just an abuser and manipulative. However, I have an extremely hard time believing that, as I know I always said he was the sweetest person until those behaviors emerged. His family even told me (when he and I were dating) that he had changed, and they don't recognize him anymore because he used to be so docile and sweet. One example: when we first started dating, he had no problem traveling to a certain state, and did.... but then at the end of our relationship he absolutely refused to go there because he said it was a communist state. Whaaaa????

Now, he and I have been talking and he seems to be better. He is seeking forgiveness from me, and said he doesn't understand where his paranoia came from, nor his stubborness and anger. I'm told there is no way he could have changed that quickly, and that he's just saying what I want to hear. But, anyway, I want to know... has anyone ever experienced this with their partner? Where they were loving, kind, and responsible, then something in them changed after seizures and they became angry and paranoid, especially on keppra? My line of work has a lot to do with neurology, so I have a hard time not blaming this on his epilepsy and seizures, because he wasn't like that when we first started dating-- otherwise I wouldn't have dated him! I've read so much about keppra rage that it's a really compelling thing to want to blame his paranoia and odd/angry behaviors on.

Keppra welllllllllllll you will find many posts regarding it a kepprage. Almost all AED's can have mood changes and yes personality changeg.  If his dosage is too high then it could be that. Like mereloaded posted a lower dosage may control his seizures and get him back to what he was like before.I took other medications that changed my thinking or memory so I got off them fast. When my project director askes about thngs like my medications I tend to listen and ask questions. Which happened with one of my medications. My memory was not what it had been befor etaking that medication. I could remember what I did and said 2-3 days after I did them. When he asked I was having problems remembering after a day.
