Offical Diagnosis - Chiari Malformation of Brain

Fri, 08/31/2007 - 16:45
This morning I was given the official diagnosis for my almost two year old daughter. She had two grand mal seizures back in April with low blood sugar. She had odd behavior and episodes that lead the neurologist to think she was having partial complex seizures. I was given medication but things were just not adding up. We had an MRI earlier in the month of the brain. Something abnormal was found on the neck, but could hardly be seen. Wednesday a second MRI was done and my daughters brain comes down 11 millimeters into her neck. More than likely she is a stage II. She has some bruising on the lower portion of the brain right now as well as a small syrinx. They believe she probably has more of them down her spin, as well. These will come and go and can turn into life threatening emergancies. The presure and build up of fluid can cause very serious conditions, obviously. The list just went on and on. I will see a nuero. surgeon mid September. There is no way at this point to link the two seizures to this condition. So we have two separate things going on or there maybe a correlation that has yet to be found. For all of you struggling for answers keep at it. EVERYTHING symptom wise for my little girls fits this diagnosis. I am happy for a direction, but very worried about this diagnosis. Since epilepsy is not what our diagnosis or a possibility at this point we will be moving on. Best of luck to all of you and wish you all the best. Jessica

Hello Jessica, Sorry to hear about your daughter, but at least you have some direction now. Is the fluid building up in your daughters brain? Did they mention hydrocephalus or putting in a shunt to drain the fluid? I was wondering because my 9yo daughter has hydrocephalus. The fluid is blocked and builds up in her brain and she had a shunt placed at 2 wks old. She now has had 2 grand mal and partial seizures. I was also told they have no proof that the two are connected but I believe they are. Good luck to you and feel free to write. shar

Jessica, I am so sorry that you are having to go through this. Let me know if you find out anything else or what the surgeon says? I have seen the name of the diagnosis but I haven't read much about it. I am just so sorry that you are going through so much. Take care and please keep me updated. Emily
