Not Sure whether to report this to neurologist

Wed, 04/01/2015 - 15:20

My 16 year old daughter was diagnosed late last summer with generalized epilepsy.  She has never had a tonic clonic seizure, only has had myoclonic episodes.  After being on meds for a short time, she was given a 48 hour ambulatory EEG, which was completely normal--no seizure activity whatsoever (which would make sense, being on meds).  Since that time, she has had some further myoclonic type episodes, mainly the arms & legs.  She was originally on clonazepam, but then they added lamictal when she had some myoclonic episodes.  She had a small myoclonus about a month or so ago, and her lamictal level was upped.  Just this week she told me that her foot "jerked" while at school.  She said that it didn't seem like her other episodes, that it was more like just a twitch in her foot, but I am really hesitant about whether or not to report this.  Thoughts?

As a side note, her older sister (age 20) was diagnosed with JME when she was 16, and my mother was diagnosed with epilepsy about 10 years ago, now.  Also, I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 11, and when I was 17 was taken off my meds, having been told that I didn't have it anymore.

It might help to keep track

It might help to keep track of her episodes. Also check if it is her time of month because hormonial changes do affect medications which can cause a person to have a seizure. You can find many posts in women with epilepsy regarding their time of month. If she has grown a lot too since a weight gain can cause medicatins theraputic levels to need a dosage increase. If she has a few more then do contack her neuro and give him the notes you have along with what she went thru. Just because a person has only had certain types of seizures does not mean they can't have others.  As for your sister and mother I also know that a person can out grow epilepsy. While I know it didn't run in my fasmily I also know we were questioned about the cause of mine if they found one. qwith me it was scared brain tissue. My cousin grew out of it and has been having a wonderful life. Joe
