All it takes is 2 seizures to

All it takes is 2 seizures to diagnose epilepsy.  As for EEG's most peoples EEG's come back normal. As Jazz says timing is a factor. I had 20-25 EEG's all come back normal. The last one came back with abnormalities (seizure activity) and knowing where in the brain it came fron they looked closer in that area in the neuro-angeogram (MRI of the 1960's) and they found scar tissue in the lower left lobes of my brain. That scar tissue was caused by a hemmorage to the brain which was caused by a blow to the head.  Understand that anybody at any age can have epilepsy. Epilepsy is more common then Parkinsons, Strokes and Az combines. What causes a seizure is an electrical impulse going off wrong in the brain causing a chain reaction.  As for medication and reviews... I have been in drug studies and know how they come up with those side effects. I also know thatmost of those side effects do happen to 5-8% of the people taking the medication. So if the posts you read and think about being horriable are only comming from 5-8% of the people taking it you need to think about the 92-95% of the people taking the med who have had no problems. I took depakote back in the 1980's and it did work. Doc and I wanted more control of my seizures and most of my medications were changed. It did help reduce the number of seizures I was having. The change doc and I made reduced them farther. Each person is different and that includes the kinds of seizures and how medications work.  If he hasn't seen his neurologist since he was put on the depakote then he needs to be checked. Generally 3 months after a medication is prescribed the neurologist wants another visit to see if the medication is controlling his seizures. If it has stopped all seizures then the dosage may be fine. If it reduced the number of seizures but ahs not stopped all seizures then teh dosage may need to be increased or decreased. Too much medication is just as bad as not enough I hope this helps Joe
