In Need Of Some Answers

Fri, 08/01/2014 - 15:58

My boyfriend, who is 26, was diagnosed with epilepsy roughly 3 years ago. Since we have been together I have been his caretaker. I have been documenting everything as of late, I had the idea to keep a journal. I'm looking for more answers for him. He has been to a sleep study and most of his activity is said to occur in the frontal lobe. That being said, I have seen him have what I think to be seizures with characterisitics from other areas of the brain. Has anyone else dealt with epilepsy being diagnosed later on in life and having different types of seizures. He has symptoms ranging from simple partial seizures all the way up to grand mal, sometimes a combonation of symptoms will occur. Most of the seizures I have witnessed have had what I call the extreme frown face and moaning noise, which I assume is due to vocal cord and muscle tension, but he will also have complex partial symptoms like trying to get up and wander. He has told me from nobody being around to witness previous seizures that he has in fact gotten up and wandered. I have also witnessed him during a recent hospital stay have what I believe are simple partial seizures. He will close his eyes and have visions with twitching movements he is unaware of but is not sleeping. He also experieced jamais vu(derealization) and visual distortion of the room being what he described as tilted. He was also on dilaudid for pain at the time(he had his seizure in the shower this time and cracked a rib), so I don't know if that would have been the cause of any of the visual distortion or visions. Any advice for me?

Welcome I read you are looking for answers which is a good thing. Have you do any research on teh 40+ different types of seizures? Do  you know what type of epilepsy he has? You postedmost activity  is in the frontal lobe. When you post most you do not say whether there is any activity in other lobes.  The type of epilepsy is different from the type of seizure. There are 40+ different types of seizures. It is not the type of epilepsy he has and where it originates.  Seizures can start in one area of the brain but they can also spread to other areas which means they generalize. Some would be secondary generalization which some seizures do. Generailzation can also mean complete coverage which would be seen as a grand mal seizure (tonic-clonic) So basically knowing the area the seizures starts is one thing but knowing the types of seizures is another.  As for keeping a journal ithat is good. I also suggest you get the my epilepsy diary which can be found in the get help section. Watch the video which tells yo uhow to use it.You can give his neuro permission to bring it up and by doing that he can see the graphs and it can help him with different medications, dosages and procedures that could help get your BF seizure free
