need advice for toddler son

Mon, 02/02/2015 - 17:58
Hi, I am new to this site but after researching medical info. on epilepsy and seizures I thought a parent website with people who have or are caring with someone with epilepsy would be helpful. My almost 3 year old son had a seizure 2 days ago and I am taking him into see his pediatrician for a follow up to our Friday night ER vist. My son had a less violent seizure when he was 4 months old but an EEG then showed nothing. He had a CAT scan last Friday and it came out normal as well. In both incidences the attending Dr. brushed it off as nothing too serious. Why I am here on this site is to get some advice from you all as to what further testing I should insist on. Is it common practice for a referral to a neurologist? Any suggestions for other tests? Another of my sons (who is older now) suffered major health problems as an infant and toddler and I found online support sites to be a wealth of info. to take into account along with the medical communitie's advice. Thanks!

Refering to a neurologist is

Refering to a neurologist is important and it should be one that  pediatric neurologist that specializes in epilepsy. Generally the 2 main tests that are done are an MRI because it is clearer and shows more then a ct scan. They have several different EEG's. The EEG is basically a brain showing the electrical output by the brain and where it comes from. A basic EEG may show nothing or come back normal. I had 20-25 show normal. They also have sleep deprifed EEG's which may show more. The last test they ran on me was another EEG in which I fell asleep in. That EEG showed abnormalities (seizure actiivity). AFter seeing tha area that abnormalitity came from they went back to the neuro-angeogram (MRI of the 1960's) and looking closer they found scared brain tissue.  SO by doing those tests they found out the cause of my epilepsy is sar tissue in the left lobes of my brain. The neurologist also have ambulatory EEG's which are set up and your child can go home with it and be normal while it shows the activity for a longer period of time. They also have units in hospitals where they may do a video EEG. The person is hooked up and the EEG is run for days there and they are videoed. My current neurologist has done all of the above EEG's on me to see if there are any procedures that can be done to get me completely seizure free. I hope this helps  Joe PS   I see Amy Jo has posted I think you might get one from mereloaded since she has a son that has epilepsy The 2 of them are learning and dealing with epilepsy for their kids. They use newer stuff because they came in after the neurologists went into specialties. Both are good and do know alot....  Me I'm old school. My diagnosis was back in the early 1960's
