My 15 year old Daughter

Tue, 11/28/2006 - 19:07
My daughter was very normal up until last year when she was 14 year old. The only thing she had was that she had febrile fits at 4 when she was sck with high 107F fever. Last year we took her to an orthodontist to see if she can get something to fix her skewed jaw. The orthodontist came up with a device that would sit in her mouth and would pull her jaw in one direction. Ever snce she started using tis device, she have had major issues. It started with small "jaw locks" where her jaw would lock and sometimes shake and she would not be able to talk. Then one mroning she had a full blown seizure where she got unconscious. She have so far had 4 "major" seizures which normally last 1-2 minutes. She was put on Neurontin and Lamictal. The dose worked fine for a year (3 neurontins and 2 lamictals once a day at 9 in the evening). After almost a year she had one more episode, a mild 10 second jaw shaking episode. Today she had her 4th full blown seizure during which she wet her pants for the first time. She has had 6 or 7 EEG, both regulkar and sleep deprived, MRI, CT Scan etc. and evry test came back normal. Does anyone have a similar story? Does anyone think there is any connection b/w her episodes and her orthdontic device? What is the prognosis for someone who starts to have seizures at 14 1/2 years. Thanks.

My daughter also started having seizures at the age of 14. We did not know it at the time and thought they were fainting spells. It was not until we sent her to camp this past summer that a nurse trained in neurology actually saw her seizure and called our neurologist and gave her a blow by blow detail that we discovered she has partial seizures. We tried Neurontin and it seemed to increase her seizures and lamictal was good except she was in the less then 1% range that was losing her hair. We are now on keppra and it seems to work. She is very tired though. I am hoping that my daughter will grow out of the seizures but there is no guarantee. We try to make her life as normal as possible. Good luck with your daughter.

My daughter started having

My daughter started having complete grand mal seizures at the age of 13 years. Five years and 8 medications later, the seizures persist. She was on a combination of lamictal and keppra and was seizure free for almost a year, but they started again and her meds were changed. Depakote seemed to make her seizures worse and she was on that for a very short time. Nothing we've tried seems to work for any lenght of time. She has seizures on the average of 8 per month. Her neurologist and epiletologist (?spelling) have just strated her on an experimental trial of progesterone. At this point, anything is worth a try as it seems unlikely she will outgrow the seizures. Good luck with your daughter and hopefully the sleepiness from the keppra will pass.
