MRI for almost 2 year old

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here.

My almost two year old either had her 2nd seizure or 2nd pallid breath holding spell last night, and was in tears last night because I know that means calling the pedi neurologist in today that we saw the first time and probably putting her out for a MRI. The first time they did a EEG and it was normal. She wouldn't go to sleep and they said sometimes they see more if they fall asleep. The pedi neurologist said wait and see if another one happens and if it does call and will probably do a MRI but she'll need to be put out for this.

This evening my two children and two children I was babysitting were playing outside when I looked at my daughter and she was laying face down on our driveway. Weirdly, I didn't hear or see her fall/lay down. I immediately picked her up, cuddled her, and said her name a few times. She was pale and and had turned blue. She became responsive pretty quickly compared to the first time this happened in the house 1 year ago. She's a breath holder who has blue spells all the time but these specific two episodes look very different than that and either fit a seizure or pallid breath holding spell. She didn't have any toys by her, no other kids were by her so I don't know what would have scared or hurt her for it to be a pallid breath holding spell.

I've considered just waiting to see if it happens a third time to do an MRI. I really hate to have to put my baby out! I even wonder what good a MRI would do if it can't totally rule out seizures or not and if a child has a seizure once a year if they would even treat it. Can anyone offer one scared mama some suggestions. Are there any clinics/hospitals that do MRI's during the night for young children to make sedation not required? I'm not opposed to doing an MRI, but sedating my almost two year old scares me!

I have had several MRI's and none of them used a sedative. However a small child might need one I don't know if your child can stay still for about an hour. I know I couldn't  especially when I was a kid even today in my older age I can't. MRI's will show anything different or wrong on the brain. I had an MRI done by my curent neurologist wanted to varify the diagnosis and in the MRI they saw scared brain tissue caused by a hemmorage to the brain. The hemmorage was from a blow to the head between 6-8 YOA. The MRI may support the diagnosis but it may not show anything. A sleep deprived EEG might show more. I had had 20-25 different EEG's all come back normal. The last test was another EEG in which I fell asleep. That EEG did show abnormalities (seizure activity). I hope this helps

My two year old just had a sedated MRI done Friday. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. They ended up having to do an EEG afterwards to get a good one done since he wanted no parts of it. The sedation used allowed them to get both tests done. The team was great. It was done via IV and it just made him fall asleep while he played with us.  Once he came too he was groggy and slept the whole drive home. Once we got home he was his normal self.  I know it's scary and I had my reservations, but the fear of not knowing what is wrong with my baby without those tests outweighed it. I hope they can figure out what is happening with your little one and can come up with a plan your are comfortable with when it comes to the MRI.

They have to use sedatives

They have to use sedatives with a small child for an MRI bc there is no way they would totally still for the 45 minutes of the MRI. My two year old daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy earlier this year and had her first MRI in July, and yes I was terrified! But it went really well! She woke up fine, no nausea or side effects from the anesthesia. It did allow the doctors to find a cyst in her brain on her pineal gland that will now have be checked every six months with an MRI. If they are suggesting your child have one, i can tell you from experience it's scary but our experience went really well.  Hope this helps!!
