medication for 4yr old with complex partial seizures

Thu, 04/19/2007 - 17:49
Our daughter Anna was diagnosed with frontal lobe epilepsy in November last year. At that time she was having three or four clusters of seizures a day, and waking several times a night (often hourly). She was put on Tegretol, with steadily increasing doses. Although she suffered badly after her morning dose (tired, bad-tempered etc) we experienced a week during which her seizures subsided and we saw a different little girl in the afternoons - alert, far more communicative and really happy (and also sleeping through the night). However, the seizures then kicked back in. Adding in clobazam eliminated the seizures (2 months now), but the side effects (waking in the early hours and unable to get back to sleep, really bad behaviour) were very negative, and we've now cut it out. Although she's still not had any seizures, Anna is still not 'all there' a lot of the time, and has huge highs and lows with lots of bad behaviour, poor concentration, bad memory etc. Each change of dose/medication so far has been difficult and exhausting, and we wonder whether we're being unrealistic hoping to get a really big improvement. Does anyone have similar experience?

I have an 11 month old with similar experience. We started Trileptil and it appearred that the seizures were diminishing but then they kicked back in full force a week later along with not sleeping, irritability, crying, screaming ect (normally very well tempered). We have added Kepra 2 days ago and though it is too soon to tell if it will help with the seizures, the behavior problems and sleeping are almost gone. ??? I can't seem to get a good explanation of what this means.
