Maybe some help for those with Absence Seizures?

Mon, 10/02/2006 - 21:11
Our daughter has had Absence Seizures since she was 2 1/2. We've been scared about meds. because of side effects. I've been doing some research about natural ways to help them. I know this sounds like a farse, but we're trying it anyway. We have been giving our daughter Cod Liver Oil capsules. Yes, I know oh how yummy! Here is the best part! I found strawberry flavored capsules at GNC in a local mall. these are specifically for kids. They are Pharmaceutical Grade so no impurities or side effects. We've noticed an improvement already in her absence seizures and her attentiveness. The capsules are called Children's DHA strawberry flavored. You can get them at GNC and I'm sure other vitamin stores. I know you can get them on line too. The bottle has a cute little fish on it. She actually looks forward to taking them. We call them her magic pellets! We've also started her on gummy bear vitamins that have a lot of vitamin b. Supposebly everyones brain needs fatty stuff amd vitamin b to function properly. I feel like this is a good way to go before any prescription meds. I think it also said somewhere that it might take 6 weeks to notice a real difference. Please don't mistake this for proper medical care as I'm not a physician of any kind just a mother who desperately wants to help her daughter. Magnesium which I'm told is found in nuts especially all natural walnuts is supposed to be very good for epilepsy. I think it's worth a try. Let me know if you want to chat sometime. The support received is appreciated.

This is my first post on this message board... hi ! My 7yo son was diagnosed w/ absences in march. when we first noticed them, we took him to a naturopathic doctor. the first thing she did was put him on cod liver oil. after trying that for a few months, we decided to try one of the medications as the seizures were happening about 30 times a day (well, as far as we could tell, that was our best guess), we did put him on ethosuximide (the generic for zarontin). When we did that, the naturopath also put him on a b6 complex, and an amino acid blend (the key ingredient being taurine) as well as a calciium/magnesium liquid and a high quality multi vitamin. He is not seizure free, we see about 5 a week (unless its hot out, or he is under extreme stress, then we see more), but overall he's is thriving very well right now, The zarontin side effects have eased off the longer he is on the medication, although i'm still very torn to even have him taking it. We are very much into natural medicine, in all areas of our lives, so it was one of the hardest choices to make. good luck with your journey, i'm so sorry you have to experience any of this.

Thanks so much for your reply! We are seeing about 3-5 Absences a day now. They seem to be much better! I just keep praying. I'll say a prayer for your son too! It's too bad that these little kids have to go through this. You're in my thoughts!
