ketogenic diet

Mon, 05/14/2007 - 16:08
Our 4 yr old has complex partial seizures that are returning now that we have taken her off clobazam (that was causing her great unhappiness). She is taking tegretol 3 times a day, but as it is not now controlling the seizures we have to look to the next step. Does anyone have experience of using the ketogenic diet with young children, we are thinking that this may be worth trying with her.

My 8 month old son is currently on the Ketogenic Diet. It works. It is used with Chiropractic care and this is the best seizure control we have had. My son had a 26 day period with only one seizure. Far from the 20-30 a day he had experienced since birth. He has generalized-partial focalized seizures. The diet requires a lot of work and commitment, but I would say no more difficult than loading your kid up on meds and still helplessly watching them have seizures. My son takes Phenobarb, Keppra, Zonisimide and Diastat. The side effect of the diet is that he also has to take Prevacid for reflux. I also reccomend to anyone to try chiropractic care. They are the natural Doc's for the nerves. We have started to take him very slowly off his meds and have had a few breakthrough seizures. I hope to have him completely off his drugs by Christmas, it's a struggle between his health and saving his brain. Good luck with your kiddo.
