Keppra. Help!

Mon, 11/07/2016 - 11:31
My six year old son has epilepsy, and has been on Trileptal for a month and a half. His EEG results while on meds showed no improvement over the one when he was not on meds. He also had horrible physical side effects from the Trileptal. They are switching him over to Keppra now. He is currently on both medications as the Keppra is increasing and the Trileptal is decreasing. He is a wreck. He has lots of physical problems...double vision, horrible headaches, and constant stomach pain. The Keppra is messing with his emotions, and he cries and cries and won't do anything. Has anyone experienced this? Do you think it will improve or should I lobby the neurologist to get him off it before more time goes on?

Changing from one medication

Submitted by just_joe on Mon, 2016-11-07 - 13:57
Changing from one medication to another does take time while weaning off one and adding the other. The side effects of the keppra will show up but generally go away after the body gets used to the new medication. How long has he been on the keppra? Has he had double vision, horrible headaches, and constant stomach pain before starting the keppra? What types of seizures does he have? There are several things that do need to be brought into this issue.  Some of the things you posted could land in different seizures. Some could be side effects of the new medication counteracting the other medication. If this were my son I would call his neurologist if this had been happening after the keppra was added and he had been taking it for a short period of time. Changing medications is not an easy thing to do. Which is why they wean people off while increasing the new medication. So call his neurologist and ask these questions in that call. The assistant can answer some of the questions. If he has the answers himself. Once he looks at the file he can see different things and yes the questions are given to th neurologist. There are times I have gotten answers from my neurologists assistant. At other times my neurologist called me after seeing and hearing my questions asked by the assistant and from the machine. Doc retired last July. He was a great neurologist which he had been for the last 15 years. He was one of the assistants that answered my questions back in the 1980's. So call and leave a message someone will answer them.I hope this helps and he gets seizure freeJoe
