Keppra

Mon, 11/27/2006 - 14:25
My 22 month old just got precribed Keppra. She is the most energetic and fun loving kid ever! The only time she has seizures (it has only happened 4 times too) is when she is woken up from a deep sleep. I know they could get worse or happen more often I am just worried putting her on drugs will make her tired or sick?! I sat in the floor and cried all morning watching her run around and play! Aren't mom's supposed to be the strong ones??? Well I just needed some advice on the seizure medication. I am sooooo unbelievably worried about side effects. Thanks so much for any advice or anything to prepare me for! Stef

I personally did not like Keppra. It made me tired and irritable All! The! Time! However, some people respond very well to it. Good luck, and be strong. blessings, Mousie

I am just so confussed b/c she doesn't have seizures often and are only provoked by being woken up from a deep sleep and the light being turned on. I am worried taking medication will make her uncomfortable or tired or sick. I am just so lost and confussed. I understand it will help prevent the seziures but she just barely has them. What do you all think? I don't want to loose my energetic and lovey little baby girl :( Stef

My daughter was diagnosed at 15yrs with JME. She also has refractory epilepsy (light sensitive) After trying different meds at different levels either alone or in combinations for about a year and a half she was put on Keppra. What a difference it made. More than any other med she retained the unique qualitites that made her, her. Her seizures are not completely controlled but I personally believe it is her own habits that contribute to the seizures she does have ie, lack of sleep, not taking meds on time (critically important), pushing herself too much, etc. Since your little one is so young, you won't have to deal with the parent/teen issue. Keppra helped make not only my daughter's life more pleasant(she didn't feel like a zombie) it brought back the smile, spunk, and spirit of our teen.(she's now 21 and still on Keppra but recently had Lamictal added) Keppra also had the least side effects-no nausea, no rash, no irritability, weight gain, personality change, no unrelenting sleepiness/fatigue. No she is not and I believe, never will be her Prior to Epilepsy self, but when Keppra was prescribed it was like having her reborn all over again. I wish you, your daughter, and family all the best life has to offer!
