Has anyone's child had epilepsy since infancy?

Fri, 07/06/2007 - 09:32
I am trying to get a sense of the longer term outcome of babies with epilepsy. My daughter is 10 months and is my only child. She was diagnosed with infantile spasms at 7months (no cause was ever identified). She has been seizure free for three months but is at risk for partial seizures -abnormal spikes were seen in her EEG. I have been reading a lot about partial seizures but haven't found a lot of information about infants with this condition. Can anyone share their experiences with me? Does the frequency of spiking in the EEG strongly correlate with the frequency of seizures. Would a person with a lot of spiking be expected to have a lot of seizures? So far my daughter's development seems to be on track which I'm thankful for. However, I'm afraid for her future. Jean

Hi Jean my name is Katie and i have a 21 month old daughter who has had seizure since day 9 of life. At first the docs told me that she was probably having infantile spasms, but her eeg showed otherwise. She has a slowing pattern in the awake state which to be honest i don't really know what it means. Morgan is developmentally delayed and has physical, speech, and developmental therapies weekly. She has seizures daily, but is a happy kid. As for frequent spiking on an eeg causing more seizures I am not exactly sure. With Morgan she does not have constant spiking but still has seizures daily. So it must vary from kid to kid. I just wanted to write to let you know you are not alone with wondering about development. If you feel that she may be even a bit behind you should ask her pediatrician about Early childhood intervention which may help by getting your daughter into therapies just to keep her on track. I hope all goes well for you and your daughter. Morgan is my only child too, so sometimes I think it is hard to determine what is delayed and what is not. Morgan's pediatrician was the one that had mentioned to me that she was behind in development. Hope all goes well for you! Katie (Morgan's mom)

Katie, Thank you for your response. It is soo helpful to hear from other parents of babies with epilepsy. Speaking to other parents makes this process so much easier to bear. It is wonderful that Morgain is a happy child. I hope she is able to gain seizure control. Jean

Hi Jean, My name is Aimee and my son has had seizures since 3rd day of life. He was sent to a Children's Hospital were they told us it was a metabolic problem. He went on Pheno Barb until 8 months seizure free. Doctor took him off and at 12 months he started having partial seizures and regressed completely too where he was admitted to the hospital for nearly 2 months. Come to find out he did not have a metabolic problem and he was rediagnosed. There he was diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Infantile Spasms He is disabled but doing very well. So yes my child started seizures when he was born and I had alot of people telling me that their child had seizures and now they are fine. They just went away. So I pray that that is the case with your child but be very intuitive to your child and don't be afraid to talk to your doctor about the slightest little thing. I wish I had done that in the beginning. I wish you guys the best and you can talk to me anytime. Good luck Aimee
