Got EEG Report. So confused.

Thu, 08/30/2007 - 16:24
This is what it says. Does this mean my son doesn't have Epilepsy? Indications for EEG: This is a patient having episodes of memory loss. Description of record: This is a 16 channel EEG recording performed primarily during the awake state in a somewhat uncooperative 12 year old patient. The 10-20 system of electroplacement is utilized throughout, with additional leads being utilized to record EKG activity. The primary awake rhythm of this recording is contaminated by a modest amount of eye movement and muscle artifact seen throughout. When this does resolve, and the patient closes his eyes, an alpha rhythm of 9-9.5 Hz appears in the occipital and posterior temporal regions, varying in amplitude between 50 100 Mv. Intermittent background theta activity of 5 - 6 Hz is seen anteriorly, varying in amplitude from 30 -60 Mv. Hyperventilation is attempted on this patient; a marked amount of muscle artifact is seen, but no specific epiletiform activity is noted. We do not see evidence of a drowsy or sleep state in this recording. With photic stimulation there is no true photoconclusive responce. Interpretation: Poorly recorded patterns due to marked eye movement and muscle artifact. No specific eplileptiform activity is seen during the awake state only. Addendum: Dr. XXX , unfortunately this was a very poor-quality study. Although there were some intermittent sharp complexes in the temporal lobe, this was not followed by any background slowing or disorganization, and was associated with a great deal of muscle artifact. The mother records events, some of which sounds as if they may be related to his polypharmacy situation. After discussing potential treatment options, we have elected to give this patient a trial of Trileptal, beginning at 150 mg. twice a day. This will be increased weekly, not to exceed 450 mg. twice a day. I have given the mother event calendars, and have asked her to record any further events. I will see him back in follow up in six weeks. Unless clinical improvement is noted with the Trileptal, it will be discontinued. Enclosed will be a copy of this patient's head MRI scan, which reveals no structural abnormality.
