Diagnosis procedure

Fri, 10/09/2015 - 10:50

Hi all,

I have temporal lobe epilepsy with complex partial seizures (with the odd grand mal) and lots of auras.

It took around 10 years to get properly diagnosed and I was misdiagnosed twice during that time. In 2010 I was finally diagnosed when the EEG came up with something.

We (my parents and I) found the diagnosis process particularly difficult. I was 10 years old and all the consultant had to go on was my parents' description of what I looked like ('she sits still for about 1 minute and doesn't like noise') and my attempt, as a 10 year old, to describe what my auras felt like. This subjective description of the auras was not enough for a diagnosis.

Has anyone else experienced long-winded diagnosis like this? I'm just interested to know whether this is a common occurrence for young children in the diagnosis process.

Thanks

Jenny
