Continual hand twitching (slow) in teen with generalized epilepsy

Fri, 03/23/2007 - 22:47
Am wondering if anyone had seen continual hand twitching (right hand, last two fingers, slow movements)? Teen was recently diagnosed with generalized epilepsy and has just started on lamictal. Neurologist seems stumped by the hand movements. EEG shows spikes and some slow waves which may have been because it was sleep deprived. Labs and CT are normal.

The only similar info I can think of is that one of my hands constatly trembled when I was on Depakote. http://www.epilepsy.com/medications/b_depakene.html However, Lamictal was just approved in 1994, so chances are good many side effects of that drugs are still not medically documented. If the constant hand movements began after starting Lamictal; I think that given what is known about Depakote, and that the two meds are used for the same purpose, I'd be inclined to suggest it's likely the Lamictal causing that limb movement and suggest you try another. http://professionals.epilepsy.com/medications/p_lamictal_commonside.html This site (unlike that for the general public) lists ataxia as a possible problems with Lamictal. "Ataxia: Wobbliness. Incoordination and unsteadiness due to the brain's failure to regulate the body's posture and regulate the strength and direction of limb movements. Ataxia is usually a consequence of disease in the brain, specifically in the cerebellum which lies beneath the back part of the cerebrum" http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=2375 Due to the fact that they must know about every simgle problem affecting the entire brain and spine, neurologists are like GP's when it comes to the over 40 types of E. I went well over 10, but it wasn't until I went to an epileptologist that I was controlled for the first time in my life. I'd suggest the teen see an epileptologist asap. best wishes, ~sol

Thanks. Hand tremors started prior to first seizure and prior to meds. Teen can easily write and make purposeful movements but when at rest hand slow twitching/tremors noticed only to last two fingers of hand.
