Child is asking "did I just have a seizure?" and I'm not sure

Thu, 04/16/2015 - 17:32

My daughter has complex partial and secondary generalized seizures.  Twice in the last week she has asked me "Did I just have a seizure?" and she does seem very sleepy afterwards which is her normal post seizure behavior but both times it happened I wasn't looking right at her but I didn't notice any unusual behaviors or facial expressions so I just said I wasn't sure.  She definitely didn't have a generalized seizure but I would imagine she could have a partial seizure without me noticing.  When I ask her to describe it she gets really embarrassed and won't talk about it anymore.  I am curious from others who are older or have older children with epilepsy how your understanding of your seizures developed and how you were able to communicate about them to others.  I would really like to help her learn to advocate for herself but she mostly seems confused and embarrassed about it right now.  Her neurologist is an extremely nice man but she is really shy around him and won't talk to him at all when we go for appointments so it's kind of up to me to talk it through with her and report to the doctor.

I was changing into a teen

I was changing into a teen when I was diagnosed and back then Mom was asked the questions. Well I did get asked questions by Doc but he asked mom most of the questions. While asking her questions I was put in a room and pads were put under my shoulders with tiny electrical impulses going off. Now that did almost put me to sleep so it was then that he asked me questions. But it wasn't easy for me to talk to family members the first year or so because I knew nothig about what I had and the neurologist never answered my question which was "What is Epilepsy"As far as if she had a seizure or not welllllllll a seizure drains energy out of the person having it. Be it a simple partial or even an absence seizure. I know been there done that. I would say that if she asks then she knows what it feels like and she probably felt the seizure.  I have seizures and did when I was 12 that lasted seconds and I knew what it was after I was diagnosed. Those day dreans in class were seizures and not day dreams. A person can be diagnosed with certain types of seizures but that doesn't mean they couldn't have others. I have had Grand Mal, Petite Mal (absence seizures) and focal seizures which could land in many places be they simple partial or complex. They could also generalize and that seizure could look like a grand mal but in those I do not lose conciousness. So if she looks like she might be day dreaming it couls be an absence seizure or a simple partial seizure. It might help if you read about the types of seizures which could also help her understand what is happening. I hope this helps and she gets the assistance she needs Joe
