Benign Rolandic Epilepsy - Does your child have learning difficulties?

Wed, 03/11/2015 - 19:20

My 7 year old son was diagnosed with benign rolandic epilepsy in February 2014. He had a seizure in late January (drooling, couldn't communicate, face twitching, arm was also seizing - sorry if that's not the correct terminology). It happened as he was falling asleep. My husband witnessed another one a few months ago (in the middle of the night) that was short, only involved his face, and he was able to talk within a minute or so. Other than that, it hasn't seemed to affect his or our life that dramatically. He is not medicated.

He is in first grade and I noticed pretty early on that he didn't seem to be grasping the curriculum and it was pretty clear he was behind the other children. They finally completed a core evaluation and he does have some significant learning disabilities (reading, math, spatial, memory, etc.). He will be starting an IEP asap and I am going to push for agressive intervention.

When he was first diagnosed, the neurologists at Boston Children's Hospital told me that he wouldn't have any learning or developmental problems associated with the BRE. But, the more research I do, the more I see the correlation (his pediatrician concurs). I'm just wondering if there are any parents out there that have children with BRE and learning difficulties. I'm also wondering if his cognitive abilities will improve once the BRE goes into remission.

We have a sleep EEG scheduled for next week and we'll be meeting with the neurologist so hopefully I can also get some more answers then.
