behavior problems

Hi, Does anyone know if Lamictal and Valproic Acid can cause behavior problems? My 10yr old daughter seems to be having a lot worse behavior problems the past week. She had to go to the principal's office twice this week. Both times she was working with a support worker and wasn't doing her work. The last time the support worker was sitting with her in the class trying to get her to write answers down from the board with the rest of the class there. My daughter kept trying to talk to her about other things and the support worker kept trying to get her back on task. My daughter ended up getting mad at her and pouting and then the support worker got mad and hauled her to the office. By the time I got there after school both the support worker and my daughter were furious. She took my daughter and I into the principal's office to talk to us. I have never seen my daughter that angry with a teacher before. It was embarrassing. I don't agree with my daughter's behavior, she has to be respectful to her teachers and she needs to be cooperative when they are only trying to help her. But I am wondering if the new meds she started a week ago are part of the problem. She is increasing to 2 pills tonight and I hope it doesn't get worse. They are on spring break next week so at least she won't be at school. I hope the side effects it this is what it is eases up and things get better. Her report card was awful, all C- and Incompletes. The teacher was giving her extra time to make up some tests. But she wasn't giving her the tests when she was ready. She is supposed to be giving her 2 today that we wanted her to write a week ago. The deadline was supposed to be yesterday, so I'm not sure what the teacher is doing now. She did not get all her make up work tests done, there was no way she could. The teacher gave her only 1 1/2 weeks to get about 5 subjects done with about 4 tests per subject. I wonder if her behavior is because everyone is treating her so negatively lately, no positive reinforcements that she is just getting frustrated and depressed. The principal and support worker told me they are really going to crack down on her the next little while, send her to the office when she doesn't comply. I am so confused, in some ways I know she needs to be responsible for her behavior and cooperate but I am also worried this may make it worse. It feels like they are all so angry with her right now and that she will not be treated very well. She has no friends at school, except for 1 and they don't always get along either. My daughter is taking 500 mg twice a day of Valproic Acid and 5 mg of Lamictal at bedtime. Tonight she goes to 10 mg of Lamictal at bedtime. Does anyone think the addition of the Lamictal could be causing it and could the behavior problems get better if this is the case? Thanks for listening. I am so worried about my daughter.

My seven year old son has behavior problems and is on Lamictal. He was a normal child before starting it ( with the exception of Epilepsy ) and never had a complaint from teachers .Now is is in time out all day at school and was suspended once.Oh,I also read that Lamictal is not good to help children with focus. The oldest medicines for Epilepsy work best for focus but need to be closely monitored for side effects. Best wishes with your child.

My son is 7 and has just got moved up to 150 mg per day of Lamictal. He has anger issues but I don't think it's because of the meds. The Doc explained that he is having frontal lob seizures which effect his personality and moods. My son has been out of school since Nov. I set up a 504 meeting with the principals and teacher. The school HAS to help your child. It might do some good to go above the principals head. I started with the district support center. They directed me on what to do. My son was tutored at home for quite a while before going back today. We are still trying to find answers to his problems but we'll see if the increase helps. Good luck with the school.
