Atypical Febrile Seizures....or is it more??

Sun, 03/11/2007 - 13:44
Hello, My daughter had her first Febrile Seizure when she was 10 months old in 2005. She spent a few days in the PICU because of the severity of the seizure. Not more than 5 weeks later, same thing only worse. In that first year of seizures she had 5 seizures within 6 months. We finally started giving her Lorazepam at the onset of a fever which helped pretty much stopped the seizures. In 2006, she had one Febrile Seizure. We didn't know she had a temp until she started seizing. She has been on Tegretol since July 2005 but since she has had three seizures after that, I am not convinced that it does anything for her. My latest concern is in the last several months I have noticed that ocassionally, she will be looking at me and I will see her eyes go out of focus and then she will be back within a second or two. I don't know for sure how often she is having these episodes or if they are happening daily. I have two concerns....is it the Tegretol that is causing this reaction, or is it seizure activity. I have talked to her neurologist about this and we have discussed doing the Video EEG to determine what is going on. Has anyone else ever seen anything like this before?? My daughter has only had one EEG and that was after her first seizure so of course it was abnormal. SHe did have an MRI in between seizures and that was completely normal. I am trying to not worry too much but it is so frustrating when her doctor wants to keep increasing her daily medication her diagnosis is still Febrile Seizures....never have they said she has a Seizure Disorder. But it is always in the back of my mind.....especially with the "eye" thing I keep seeing. I would appreciate any feedback I can get. Stacy

My 2 year old son had his 1st Febrile Seizure in his sleep the other night. Since then, he randomly does this eye roll thing with his eyes and then he's fine. It lasts like 1-3 seconds. Has anyone else had this issue or fpund out what it could be?

Febrile seizures are just how they sound-a seizure caused by a fever.so if your daughter is having problems and she doesnt have a fever it cant be febrile seizures!Have you looked at the side effects of tegretal?Im not familar with the side effects from tegretal my daughter is on trileptal. It does sound like you are dealing with a seizure disorder though. My daughters mri's and eeg's are always normal and she has had seizures for four years now.iT is a very fustrating disorder, and things arent as simple as people would think.I hope all goes well for you and your daughter. If you need to you can always email me.

What type of seizures does your daughter have, if I can ask?? How old is she?? I am very scared about this whole thing. The Febrile Seizures are bad enough, but I guess this eye thing - where she fades out is really worrying me. I need to know if it is really a seizure or not, but yet I am afraid of the answer. My husband is not very understanding about all of this which puts all of the pressure on me. He is a great dad but he cannot understand why the doctors cannot fix her. Underneath it all I think he believes it is his fault. Anyway, I appreaciate your response and the support. I can talk to my friends about it but talking to someone who deals similar issues is different. If you wouldn't mind sharing more I would like to hear it. In a way I suppose preparing for what we could be facing in the future. To others out there, has anyone else had a child that has either started with Febrile Seizures - and later was diagnosed with a Seizure Disorder. Also does anyone know what I am talking about with the eyes going unfocused for a second or two. Is that seizure activity?? Thanks to all for taking the time to read this. I am new to this site but I think the support I have seen between members is wonderful!!
