asd and epilepsy?

My son who just turned 4 was just diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder last month. He has had 2 seizures that I know of for sure. First one was at his 3rd Bday party where we found him lying on his back under picnic table staring with his head turned to the right and his head ticking repeatedly to the right. I tried shaking him and getting him to look at me but he was unresponsive. I drug him out and tried to stand him up which in the process he looked at me dazed, confused and flushed. I tried asking him if he was ok and whats wrong but he wouldnt talk. He then crashed out on a blanket right in the middle of his party. The second time was a month or so later I walked in living room and found him laying on his back near entryway just staring with weird look on his face. I helped him up and asked him if he was ok. He said "i tired" then just layed down on couch and sucked his famous two fingers and rested. His neuro said I probably walked in right after the seizure was over. His ped. nuerologist who dx'ed him with mild autism did a 1 hr eeg which we could not wake him up towards the ending for alert readings. He reviewed it right after and said everythings normal. The past few weeks hes been having these episodes which im not sure what they are, im wondering if you could give me some input. He does this thing where he has a weird look on his face and sometimes his heads cocked or eyes looking upwards and blinking and bugging eyes out and after a few seconds hell hit his head repeatedly real hard, somtimes exclaiming "aaah" or "oh man" exagerativly. Sometimes he wont hit himself and after staring and stuff just press his hand down on his eyes real hard then do the staring thing a few seconds more. When I ask him whats wrong? Sometimes hell ignore me or sometimes actually lots of times he says "nothing" But yesterday I asked him and he said "Im getting the water out" and tonight he said he saw the color orange in his eyes. The past weeks hes been alot more short tempered and aggressive as well. Lately hes been doing this numerous times a day maybe 10 or so. I called his nuero and told him I dont think hes just frustrated and we are in the process of getting an mri done. Im worried that maybe thier absence seizures of some kind or maybe just reactions to subclinical seizures since hes becoming more aggressive and frustrated since but I dont know much about seizures. Ive heard that epilepsy can coexist with asd's in as much as 30%. What do you guys think? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks! .........Nikki

Look into temporal lobe seizures - on google or webmd, for example - I am not a doctor, but what you describe sounds just like my 6 year old daughter and her episodes. She has a 'slight' form of autism and has been having seizures for about 3 years, this combination sounds very similar to yours. When people have Temporal lobe seizures, many times they see auras, which sounds like the colors he describes. My daughter also sleeps for hours after a seizure and is very thirsty. As a side note, from my own experience, you have to be agressive in dealing with the Doctors (not in a bad way), but you have to do research to know what questions to ask, what tests to have done, etc. My daughter will be having surgery next month that will hopefully rid her of the seizures. Best of luck, hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your reply. We are starting our son on trileptel (will be ready tomorrow for pickup). I also think he experiences auras but I can never be sure because this whole seizure think is so confusing! They do sound alot similar and I will definately look into temporal lobe seizures. Best wishes to you and your daughter on her up comming surgery.
