age to explain seizure disorder to your child?

Sat, 03/17/2007 - 13:59
my son is newly diagnosed with a seizure disorder still awaiting to have more tests done and DR appointments but his EEG was defiantly positive and he has been started on medication right away. Apparently he has them approx alot and we didn't notice a thing until one day in a DRs office for his asthma he stopped breathing, turned blue and coded on the DR.. If it wasn't for this happening last week, we wouldn't of known until he started to have grand mals I guess. He;'s currently having them in his sleep the DR said and complex absent ones where we may think or a teacher may think he's ignoring us? What age is appropriate to explain this condition to them? Only 5 y/o right now and just found out last night and given a medicine called trilepal alot of info at once and confused at the moment but worried about how to react and explain to him thank feeling helpless at the moment

My daughter is six.she was two when she started having seizures.she is also on trileptal.I think its important to explain to your son right away for different reasons. The first is that he needs to beaware of what is going on so that he can learn to regonize his symptoms and tell you when he feels that he might have a seizure.also for me seizures are apart of our lives and it seemed that if I kept it a secert it was teaching my daughter that some how they were bad and something to be ashamed of.almost like a bad secert.Seizures for kids are already hard to deal with and when they feel like they cant talk about it openly it makes it even harder.Trileptal has some great childrens books to help explain seizures if you need the help.My daughter loves reading the stories because it helps her to see that she isnt alone.Good luck to you and your son and if you have any questions you can email me.

how and where do I find these books? We only learned and started this medicine Friday evening when the DR called me to tell me and call in the script. So it's all sort of new to me as well and 70% of the seizures he's been having have been while he's been asleep or absent silent ones that we've been totally unaware of.. I'm still kinda beating myself up over this and not knowing before. they suspect it's been happening for quite sometime at least a year or more and I had no clues... Glad I stumbled upon this site thank so much!

If you go onto trileptal.com they have games and stories, etc.its also a good place to get information. It is very hard exspecially when all of this is new.I didnt even know about this web site until just over a year ago.I dont allow my daughter to use seizures as an excuse not to do things.Dont feel bad about not knowing that your son has absence seizures. There hard to catch.I didnt know until last summer that my daughter was having them and she has had seizures since she was two.she sees the doctor routinely and no one knew until then.It happens. We all do the best we can.
