ADD or Seizure med side effects

Sat, 05/06/2017 - 07:41
My son is 7 years old. As a 9 month old, he had meningitis followed by a stroke and partial seizures. At one he had surgery due to a subdural empyema. So he has lots of medical brain trauma. He was on seizure meds for 2 years and was weaned off of them. He was seizure free for 2 years and then at 5 started having simple partial and complex seizures again, confirmed by an EEG. Since then we have been on several different meds because he keeps having breakthrough seizures. He went for Long Term Monitoring 2 months ago and found that he is having seizures that we were not seeing. His doctor took him off of Trileptal and kept him on Depakote but added Zonegran. Behaviorally, my son has always struggled and we have sought answers and tried to convince the doctor that the meds were causing him severe agitation and aggression but after he was started on Zonegran, things have been 100 times worse. He has no fuse and he will blow up when you are not expecting it. The doctor seems to have gone MIA and I cannot get a hold of her. A School evaluator suggested that maybe we are dealing with ADD on top of seizures and the meds. That makes sense since all of the meds he is on seems to wind him up instead of calm like they are supposedly supposed to do. Has anyone dealt with this with their kids? I don't think the doctors believe me when I say the meds are making him crazy. His neurologist even told me that it sounded like boy stuff. This is more extreme than overactive boy though. He always appears aggressive, dazed, angry, and drugged/exhausted looking. Does anyone have any thoughts?

If it is within your possibilities, perhaps a second opinion would be a good thing. It is important that doctor listens to your concerns. Personality changes are a common side effect of aeds. On the other hand, there is some truth that 5 years old are little restless tyrants, I know because I teach pre-k, kindergarten! You know your child better than anyone else. All neuron have nurses on call that you can discuss symptoms with. Good luck
