Absence Seizures: Weaning Medication

Wed, 10/28/2015 - 23:57

We have a 6 year old taking ethosumuxside 250ml twice a day. Seizure free for 3 years. We go next month for overnight EEG, if results are still good, weaning medication will be discussed(as told by nurse who set up our appt). I am extremely nervous about this because now we have a vibrant 6 yr old who is excelling, where as before, completely different. I have read and researched. Read and researched. Moms and dads...grandparents and care givers...have any of you ever weaned your child from the medication, and what was your outcome? Of course we all want to believe in great results from EEG! It is also very scary to consider the "what ifs" during the weaning process is the remission doesn't go well. TIA :)

My daughter was on 3

My daughter was on 3 medications to achieve seizure freedom and we have weaned all but one.  For us it was a quality of life issue because the side effects were preventing her from being the bright kid who excels in school.  We are still fighting to get to that point with her but at least she is going in the right direction now.In your case I would ask the neuro about your options.  My neuro & I have debated the time table of weans almost every visit.  There is no law that says you have to wean after 3 years. My neuro, who errs on the side of being more conservative vs. me who wants freedom from side effects, has quoted studies that testify to the wisdom of waiting 5 years.  You sound like you are in a really good place right now, so I understand your concerns.
