24hr EEG with Toddlers

Mon, 07/09/2007 - 13:13
Kaitlyn just saw a new neuro on Friday and he has scheduled a 24hr EEG for tomorrow. It was a fast appointment so little time to prepare. I wondering if any of you can tell me what to expect and what I should do to help Kaitlyn with the whole experience. We are packing a big bag of all of her favorites toys and her comfort items so that way she will have some things that she is comfortable with. I was wondering if she wil have to be connected to a machine the whole time, or if it is wireless? I am also wondering if they will tell you if they see anything on it during the time that you are there, or if they wait until it's all over? She won't be at a Childrens Hospital so I am not sure what to think about it, however it is an Epilepsy Center so that should be good. I won't be able to stay with her, but my husband is. I have to be home with our son, so I am worried if she will be able to sleep with the electrodes on her head. What was everyone elses experience like? We have had a 30 min EEG before and that was a fight to get them on her head so I don't know what to expect for a longer one. Thanks for the help!

We had one while Hayden was in the hospital. She is connected to the machine the whole time and not able to get up and run around so make sure you take alot of toys. Hayden was able to move around in the bed and I was also able to hold him in a chair right next to the bed. It was hard for Hayden to get used to the wires but they covered them up really good so he could not pull them off. He did also sleep with them on. At our hospital they did have people in a monitoring room during the day looking at the EEG but they did not tell us anything until after the doctor came in the next day. If it was like ours they will give you a tracking sheet to write down whenever you think she has had a seizure and there will be a button to press to mark the time on the EEG when she has one. The next day they will go through all of the EEG to make sure that you did not miss any. (I missed about 3 of them). We wish you the best of luck and hopefully everything will go well. Take care, Michelle

My daughter had one last year. It was a 72hr eeg. She was able to walk around her room, and alittle ways down the hallway but that was all. She couldnt go to the play room. You are doing the right thing by bring her her favorites things. Also if you can get her a few new things that she doesnt get until she gets there. Sometimes something new is helpful in keeping their attenetion for awhile. Also bring snacks. Your husband probably wont get to leave the room, so snacks are helpful. They can always sedate her if they need to to get the electrodes on her head. My daughter didnt have to hard of a time sleeping with them on,but she is a couple years older than your daughter. The neruos did come in every day and give me a report on what was going on. Let us know how it goes.

Thank you so much! I think we are going to make a stop by the store to pick up some new toys that she doesn't have so that way she will have something new. I have packed up some snacks and toys, I am going to try and be there with them so that way there is relief for my husband and he can leave the room or go to the restroom without having to worry about her. I am just hoping that she does better than what we expect her to. I'm sure she will. I just get nervous when they are going to be away from me for any period of time. Thank you again.
