24 hr EEG/video in hospital

Fri, 11/17/2006 - 18:34
Has anyone ever had one of these done for a 3 1/2 year old? I have no idea how I am supposed to entertain a 3 1/2 year old for 24 hours! I am dreading it. The doctor said that she is really delayed, especially her speech so she wants to see if she is having seizures that we cannot see. She said that this way they will have 24 hours of data and she can see the speech therapist and occupational therapists right away since she has been admitted into the hospital. Emma hates having those things glued to her head. I was wondering how it went for those who have done this?

Our son was 3 1/2 when he had his first 24 hr EEG in 2004. We told him he was an astronaut. The white gauze and wires were his "helmet" and the cord plugged into the wall was for his "spacewalk", he had to stay plugged in and carry his cord around. The hospital let him bring toys and books to his room and he got to watch videos. Some places even have "day rooms", a different room that gives a change of scenery where they can be plugged in. The next day he had an MRI and we told him he was going on a rocket ride to Mars. The theme worked well for this age...of course you have a daughter but girls can go to space too!

hi !! Long time no talk. I am sorry that you are having to do this test with Emma. It is not as bad as you may think. WE just did this with Emily Klair in July. It took me and warren and two nurses to hold her down to get the electrodes on her head..like wrestling a bear..it took about an hour to get them on. We were in there about 4 days..we took everything from videos to paints to markers and crayons and every book we owned. it is a hard thing but we learned so much about her sz and it has helped us out with her therapy and medicine. I will be thinking of you all please e-mail me and let me know how you are doing...i miss talking to you. Emily Klair's mom..Kari

I agree, the VEEG is most informative. Mine was back in Sept., they had me incarcerated for 9 days and now I'm 3 days away (Nov.21) from surgery and the right temporal lobectomy that the doctors figured was the focus of ALL my seizure activity. Without this study & some other tests, I quite likely would not be headed for the operating table next week. I'll be home till the 20th. I'd LUV to chat !!!
