2 year old sick... and scared of more seizures!

Tue, 05/15/2007 - 14:43
My two year old daugther Kaitlyn has had about 5 seizures since the time that she was diagnosed with epilepsy and everytime that she's had them, it seems as though she has been sick or under some sort of stress. This morning she woke up with a cough and sneezing and complaining that she hurt, so we have just been hanging out and watching to make sure she doesn't get worse. However at about lunch time she spiked a fever and I've given her Motrin and it hasn't broken yet, it has actually gone up a little bit. I took off all of her clothes to make sure she doesn't get hot but she's still burning up. I am terrifed that she is going to have another seizure from the fever, and I can't get through to her doctor. I can't get her to drink anything or eat anything. Just kind of worried. Have any of you noticed a correlation between the seizures and if your children are sick with fevers? If so, what do you to try and prevent them from happening? And how often do they happen when they are sick? I'm scared to put her down for a nap because I don't want her to have another one while sleeping (that's when they mostly happen). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi, I hope your daughter is doing better. My 22 month old son is on meds but almost always has seizures when he gets sick, usually with a viral infection or any slight fever. The threshold for seizures goes down when they are sick. I know how you feel, anxious and worried to death that the seizures will start. The best thing for my son is I give Motrin immediately and then alternate between motrin and tylenol every 3 hours. At night I make sure he has a dose of motrin in. I usually end up staying up all night and stare at the video monitor. How could I sleep, right. Trying to keep your child healthy is so exhausting isn't it? Stay strong and God Bless.

Thank you for the reply. Well it's been two days since the fever started and still no relief from it. Kaitlyn's fever hasn't gone down below 101.4, we are rotating Motrin and Tylenol and have since the start of the fever and it hasn't done much of anything. She is sleep deprived from not feeling well, she won't sleep at all. The neuro said that this is a prime time for another sz, sure hope that doesn't happen. We haven't filled our scripts for the Diastat yet, and a trip to the hospital would wear her out. So you have a video monitor in his room? Does your son have seizures at night? And do you find that the video monitor helps you to sleep easier knowing that you can see him if you need to? We are thinking about getting one, but haven't yet.

The last few times I have had to use diastat have been in the middle of the night when Brady has woken up sick. This past Jan. he was in ICU for 4 days and started having cluster seizures in his sleep. I purchased the video monitor the first night home. I probably would have slept on his floor for weeks if I didn't. Thank the Lord he hasn't had anymore seizures since Jan. I know with Brady if he gets sick the seizures come at the onset of his sickness so hopefully for you Kaitlyn is past this onset and will just get better, no seizures! By the way, the monitor I have is made by Summer, handheld so I can take it to any room I'm in, perfect for naptime.
