2 Month Old Having Potential Seizures

Mon, 05/25/2015 - 19:05

Hi Everyone.

My daughter is Riley.  This is her story:

When Riley was about 5 weeks old she began having a seizure like episode where she would space out, her hands and feet would rhythmically shake, and she would then cry/scream when it was over.  It lasted about 4-6 seconds.  She ate normal afterwards.

A few days later it happened again.  We took her to the ER.  They admitted her ran blood work, spinal tap, 2 EEGs, 1 36-hour video EEG, MRI (no contrast), CT scan, upper GI study, and reflux probe.

The "episodes" changed slightly on the hospital to more of an eye fluttering and arm twitch/shake.  She had at least two during the video EEG.  We flagged them both.

Aside from the reflux probe, all test came back normal.

She still had two episodes, so they put her on Keppra (4 ml twice a day) under the theory of "treat the patient not the EEG."  No episodes for the next several days, and we left the hospital 3 days later.  Baby was also diagnosed with reflux and given Zantac.

All seemed fine.  The episodes generally stopped.  She had a few leg stiffening/crying episodes, but I could see those actually being reflux related.

The neuro wanted us to go to a better hospital to "put this thing to bed."  Started weaning her off the Keppra a few days ago.  She starts having episodes where stares off, eye rapidly blink, and her hand pulsate Ina gripping motion for a 4-6 seconds.  She cries when it's over.  Stays alert after.

Tomorrow we go to the "better" hospital (Miami Childrens) for a 24 hour video EEG.  Hoping for answers.  So concerned about developmental delay.  She is now 8 weeks.  Was hoping others might be able to relate and share insight.

I'm told that it's positive everything has come back clean.  Fair enough, but then what is it?  And are we treating it properly?  Also, if it's not a seizure (as the neuro says it's not), why does it stop when Keppra started and start again when Keppra stopped?

I feel so beaten down.  Riely is 8 weeks currently.  Little smiles here and there--more frequent than before--but tough to tell whether they're social smiles or still reflex.  She is also making more noises, but tough to tell if they are coos.  Me hawking on her every movement doesn't making it easier.
