15 Yr old son with BRE still having seizures

Wed, 06/25/2014 - 12:48

My son was diagnosed when he was 10 with BRE.  He had his 1st seizure in July and then his 2nd seizure in February.  (At that time, HE had decided that he did not need the medicine and just did not take it when he was told to and after 3 days, he had a seizure.)  He did not have another one until the day before Thanksgiving.  Then, had another one 2 weeks later.  He had been taking Keppra so the doctor raised his dose and he was fine.  He made it 2 years without a seizure and all of his EEG's were normal.  We just weaned him off the meds at the end of last year.  He took his last pill at the beginning of January.  Had EEG in March and everything was normal.  He is at his Dad's for the summer and He just had a seizure yesterday morning.  His stepmother and I are devastated.  He will be 16 in November.  Everything that I have read has said that kids grow out of this by 15.  The doctor had told us that there was a 30% chance of him having a seizure in the 1st year.  We just didn't think it would actually happen.  I am just wondering if there are other people who did not grow out of this "childhood" epilepsy?  We don't want him to have to stay on meds for the rest of his life.  We also worry about SUDEP because his seizures happen while he is asleep.  Is there anyone else whose child did not grow out of BRE??  Thank you!
