Why siezures after swimming only ???

Sun, 09/24/2017 - 17:59
My son is 16 and swims competitively since he was 8 years old . He also participated in numerous lake mile swims . This past year he has suddenly had "blackout" like symptoms after sprinting or durring racing . He normally knows when this is happening, gets out of the pool and then needs about 4 to 5 mins for this supposed exhaustion episode to pass. His eyes are closed but he remains somewhat responsive . My daughter witnessed the last one and she noticed his body twitching and shaking a bit . We initially visited a cardiologist, then numerous physicians and finally were referred to a neurologist. EEG results showed irregularities and he has been prescribed a trial of 500mg Keppra. It's been a tough year but finally we are getting somewhere. My concern is that he does intense cardio training on land and he has never had a seizure ever except when he swims . I have heard of athletes having hypoxia but obviously his EEG results show that these are real siezures . We are so new to all of this. Can anyone please help??

Well a person can do almost

Well a person can do almost anything other people can even if they have epilepsy. I know I have done things a lot of people with epilepsy wouldn't think of doing. The EEG that shows irregularities aka abnormalities, spikes or waves are not showing seizures. They are showing seizure activity or a better way to put it would be things that can start a seizure. They are also showing where in his brain those abnormalities are coming from. Has an MRI been done to look at those areas of his brain? What starts a seizure is an electrical impulse hitting wrong in his brain. What the seizure is "The Chain reaction caused by that abnormal or irregular hit"For me they saw them coming from the left lobes of my brain. The tests the MRI took the place of showed scar tissue in those lobes. Anything that is different on the brain. Be it scar tissue or a cell formation or a tumor.Relax Mum and let your son be like all the other sons out there. Just keep account of his seizures and note them. Make sure he takes his meds as directed. 2 times a day means morning and night and they should be close to 12 hours apart.
