What does not kill you makes you stronger...

Well, I've had two tonic/clonic seizures separated by almost six months (July 8, 2006 and January 2, 2007). There were a LOT of things that could've triggered the first one (though historically it hasn't happened for the last 10 years under less extreme circumstances), but the second one had very little overlap with the first (except for lack of sleep and stress, which I've been going through for more than half my life since I'm a workaholic--I'm 34 now). I'm on Dilantin which is taking its own toll (particularly from the loading dose). MRIs and EEGs are on the way. CT scans were done the first time around and were normal. I have more detail at http://www.ram.org/ramblings/philosophy/seizures_are_scary.html including some pictures. So the second time I had a seizure, 3-4 hours before that, I felt I was going to have one--it's an intense buzzing in my brain (like there's a lot of stress). I hadn't slept well, my alarm woke me up before I had a restful sleep, I didn't eat much, and I drank two cokes (I used to drink a lot of it but seem to have trouble with it these days). Normally in such situations in the last six months, I've taken a clonozepam (why not) but this time even though I felt I should, I didn't (perhaps it is for the best since it brings this problem out into the open). Good luck to you all and I wish you never have another seizure again. --Ram

The MRI came back perfectly normal. I have a CD with nice pictures of my brain (high resolution) which is fascinating. EEG is next month. --Ram

Just chronicling this in terms of time... the EEG (and ECG) came back normal too. But I now have the results of the all the blood work in front of (my two seizures and a recent one when they did the EEG). Perhaps the only thing I notice is that generally almost all my electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, phosphate) were lower right after the seizures than my most recent one. I've also seen blood work from the past before and don't recall the electrolytes being off (I will check this soon). I've put up the actual values here (along with the MRI/CT images): http://www.ram.org/ramblings/philosophy/seizures_are_scary.html --Ram
