What are "sharp discharges" on an EEG?

Thu, 10/09/2014 - 22:45

I have been having seizures. Not to sound ignorant, but until recently I didn't see the big deal about it. I've had them on and off for years. I've drove and everything. But I stopped driving months ago when I had a black out moment and came to after I had walked into the highway. Luckily it was in the middle of the night, in a small town and no one was around. But it scared me. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and during that visit the doctor (new to me) asked me "Do you now or have you ever had seizures?" I was all "Well, yea." And she looked shocked since it's not in my records here. So I was told if I don't drive, they won't report me to the DMV (that way my son who has a learners permit can practice driving). I was grateful for that.

I was sent for an EEG and to a neurologist. The Neuro doc listened to the carefully documented (by my son) seizure moments and I am sure I had a partial one in the office. Anyway, she said that the EEG showed "sharp discharges" on the temple area. I asked if it was the left side and she said yes... then asked why. Because when I have those moments before the seizures, the left side of my head "hurts". It's not OWIE hurts, it's a warm, fuzzy, zapping feeling. My friend said that's an aura.

Anyway, so I am on keppra (not sure if I like it) and I tried researching "sharp discharges" for EEG but I am running into a wall. What does that mean? And any other advice would be lovely.

My daughter has Seizures also, I asked her if she had pain also and she said yes, she has tried all types of Meds but nothing seems to work. Hopefully Kappra will do the job. She have to get EEG also. She's very hard headed, she keeps talking about wanting to get a car. I tell her its a bad idea. I would hate to contact DMV myself and report her, butif she ddoesn't listen to what I'm saying, well I'll have to do what I have to do. Thk U for ur little Message. Cas
