TV

I was watching the show Untold stories of the E.R. the other day and they mentioned something that seems tough to believe for me. Here is a explanation of the situation. A five year old kid was brought in after he suddenly passed out in the middle of watchin TV. While one doctor was doing tests on him in the ER another one was asking his parents questions in another room. During these questions the topic of epilepsy came up. It turned out the mother was epileptic and on Dilanton. The parents also mentioned they had some tests done on him when he was two that determined he was not epileptic so they ruled out the possibility that he was having a siezure. So here is question 1. It doesn't seem possible to be 100% sure that a kid in this situation can be determined non epileptic just through a few test at the age of two. Isn't it possible he could still show signs of epilepsy that don't show on test done at the age of two? A while later the found out the kid consumed some of the mother's dilanton. They dealt with this by injecting liquid charcoal into the kid's blood stream. So here is question 2. How can that help? I have heard of people in psych wards being made to drink liquid charcoal and I don't understand that let alone having it injected into the blood stream.

Might be a good idea to write the station and ask the questions! I didn't watch the show, but in general, there is no one test to tell if someone has epilepsy or not. Routine tests may be negative at one point but show seizure activity on a routine EEG later on. The exception may be if the events in question were recorded on EEG telemetry. Re overdose of medication, defer this to an emergency room specialist - I thought it was drinking or by tube into the stomach.

Im sort of epileptic myself.

Im sort of epileptic myself. I had surgery for it on sept 19th 2005 and haven't had a seizure since. Before that I was having 5 - 1- seizures a week. But Im still into the world of epilepsy research even though epilepsy isn't effecting me as much anymore. The show just seem to be a little off with their facts cause although my seizure was at 10 months I have heard of people developing it at many different ages. I think the show was off with a few things they said. But I think we both agree there is no test you can do at such a you age to determine that someone is 100% non-epileptic. Ethan
