Tonic Clinic Status seizures

Sat, 04/15/2017 - 16:57
My daughter in law has epilepsy and has had seizures from the time she was 14. She told me she had a couple different types but not sure right now. She doesn't have insurance at present but she does get her medicine that is still prescribed to her. Two days ago her husband was in a hospital for acute pancreatitis. I stayed at hospital because I can't drive in the dark. I went home the next morning and DIL was in my bed and did not know me. She was frightened. She was crunching on something, later found out it was part of a tooth. She was spitting and was soaked PJ's, bed etc with urine, she was flails, but moderately. It tums out she had gone into a seizure shortly after we left the night before, probably around 9:00. I found her about 8 am. So possibly 11 hours in house by herself having a seizure. Well, actually longer because I didn't know how long she had had the seizure. I tried to stroke her hair and talk softly to her and she would look at me and recoil and try to get away but she couldn't talk except the moaning and grunting and spitting. But after 30 minutes I was too scared not to call ambulance. So they came and took her to hospital. They gave her a couple Ativan shots and she seemed to relax a bit. But she was out of it for almost 24 more hours before she started talking. They did an EEG and MRI. She said they were abnormal but that was to be expected after that. (Oh, when she was seizing she would also rock backward and forward. ) I noticed her ankles were swollen. She said that's part of it. Not sure about that. My son has always been with her when she had seizures. Not sure if him not being there had a contributing effect. She had received distressing news the night before. I know nothing about all this. She said she had tonic clonic status seizures. It seemed like a very concerning event. I would appreciate any input.

I agree that seemed to be a concerning event as are all seizures but when they involve tonic clinic movements, last that long, and don't really stop on their own it is more severe. I have had seizures since a MVA in 2013 and I will routinely have seizures withing 12 hours of even moderate physical labor of any kind or stressfully/distressing news. I have had neurologists tell me at times not to go to the ER if I don't have too (seizure stops on its own, I can take an anticonvulsant, can rest, don't have cluster/more seizures, no memory/cognitive issues etc) but I usually have several or all of those combined and if I have a breakthrough seizure "I" have learned I need to go to the ER because things are going to continue to get worse if not. (others call because I have no memory of what happened or even that anything is wrong) With the type of seizures she is having I would recommend the same. Do what you can to make her comfortable, not scared, and not hurting herself...while/after you have called the ambulance. Getting a seizure stopped asap can help reduce damage to the brain and body and bring her back from that scary place she gets lost in.

A person can have what are

A person can have what are called cluster seizures. Those are the same type of seizures with time in between them. That time could be minutes or hours. Status epilepticus I a lot different but the cluster can take a person into status. Status epilepticus is constant seizures with seconds between them. I ws in it and I was having 40 convulsive seizures an hour. Which went on for over 8 hours before we could even get a vehicle I could ride in. Back then there was no 911. once I was in the hospital the doc said that they had called mom to come get me but before she got there I went into it again. All I know is that I had left the house after visiting Mom and was headed to my apartment and the next thing was coming to 3 days later. Yes it is concerning.. Do talk to her neurologist and ask about a rescue medications. If she has a seizure it can stop the next meaning it stops cluster seizures which can keep her from going into status epilepticus. Status can be with other types of seizures too. So talk to them about this and ask if they have a medication that can keep her from going into status again.
