SUDEP ?

Fri, 09/29/2006 - 12:02
I had posted 2 questions earlier in the week but figured out the answer to one by just reading other posts. This one I am still wondering about: Can someone with simple partial's be at risk for SUDEP? Or does this rare phenomenon pertain only to other types of Epilepsy?

Hi, I also have simple partial seizures. I was told by my neuro that I could be at risk for SUDEP. Though very rare it's still scary. He referred to it as SUDEC however. I guess anyone who has Epilepsy is at risk. Interesting you should bring this up. I never heard of it until a month ago. Hope I helped a little bit. DixieLee

Hi Dixie!!! I actually "heard" of this phenomenon in a non-medical context. I was simply watching "Dr. G- Medical Examiner" on Discovery Health and there was an episode where this was the cause of death for one patient who suffered from Epilepsy. I googled the term SUDEP the next day after watching the show and came up with this link: http://www.emedicine.com/neuro/topic659.htm In the scheme of things though, I suppose we could all buy the farm at any moment from any number of self-perceived "benign" situtions. While on the way to get a gallon of milk at the market, get in a car accident, lightening striking while running into house from rain, eating McDonalds hamburger + getting Mad Cow disease. It sure is dissettling though, perhaps because it lacks predictabilty.

Have any of you seen the book on SUDEP? Epilepsy.com has some of the content on this site - here's the link.

There is no one way to identify risk but the severity of seizures, and whether uncontrolled or not is likelyh key factor. I attached section on risk as well.

Thanks to everyone for bringing this up. Hard to talk about but a real one for so many.

Take care,
