Simple partial seizures?

Tue, 04/18/2017 - 20:36
Hi all! I am new here. I'm hoping to get some insight into what's been happening to me while I wait for my neurologist referral. 2 years ago, I was 7 months pregnant and had a seizure that caused my husband to call 911. I remember nothing except for feeling weird that day and I was throwing up while he held my hair and the next thing I knew I was in the hospital. I have never had a seizure and they don't run in my family. I was told I had a Urinary Tract Infection and that is what caused the seizure. Ever since then, every few months for about 3 straight days I have strange episodes that are very predictable in the way they happen to me. I first start out with deja vu and then I get a strange feeling in my nose that then travels to my throat. The feeling makes me compulsively swallow and then it goes into my stomach and makes my stomach hurt. Sometimes it even forces me to have to go to the bathroom. I end up sweaty and my skin is clammy. All in all it lasts a few minutes and I am totally aware of what's going on and I can drive and go about my normal activity. It's just an unpleasant feeling that scares me. Especially because that baby I was pregnant with 2 years ago when I had my first seizure is now 2 years old and I am a stay at home mother to her and she would not know what to do if I had a bigger seizure and something happened to me while my husband is at work. Every thing I've researched thus far describes what I'm having as simple partial seizures but I'm wondering if I can get any insight from anyone. Thanks so much!!!

I would definitely recommend seeing an actual neurologist instead of just relying on info you got in the ER.

Just so you'll know it. Most ER rooms do not look at everything. They run general tests that they run on everybody.. They generally don't run tests for epilepsy or seizures. So they come up with something a lot of people have or that they hear a lot. A  Urinary Tract Infection is being used for almost everything now. We took a 90+ yo lady into one and told them she had a stroke. The first doctor ran tests and a neurologist was there. The first doctor told us it was a  Urinary Tract Infection  when we had heard the neurologist say she had a stroke. So she was released and we took her to a doctor the next day and she had had a stroke. What you posted could be any of the partial seizures. By what you posted they could have generalized a little since you don't know what happened between him holding your hair and throwing up and being in the hospital.  Do tell them about this and what you know what happened during it.Questions to ask the neurologist??? Oh there are many to ask... But they will be asking you questions and do answer them honestly. They will probably want to do tests. One is a EEG the other is a MRI. The EEG shows the electrical output coming from the brain the other shows the brain as it looks which would show them if there is anything different on it then everybody else has. If you like the neurologist then by all means keep a good relationship with them. A lot of things can be handled in a phone call. I called Doc  and we changed dosages and medications in calls. So there were many times I didn't see Doc for a couple of years since calls did what a visit would do.

I agree very much about the

I agree very much about the ER info. I had been to 3 or 4 different ERs here in ABQ maybe 10 times in 4 years but only the uni. Hospital ER has an EEG so I'd have seizures in other ERs but the only info they got from those was what they could see me physically doing and had no way of knowing what was going on in my brainwaves. I ended up calling the fire Dept ambulance and the ABQ ambulance: told them my situation with epilepsy and that is they why they would most likely be called to my address, and that I only wanted to be taken to the Uni NM hospital ER because they have an EEG. Then the last time I had seizures about 3 weeks ago now I woke up the next day with no memory but in the uni. Hospital neurology floor connected to their video EEG with them telling me I had 2 more seizures "captured/recorded" on their video EEG. By far the most valuable diagnostic information I've gotten since my seizures began. A lot of times they will ask if there is an ER you prefer to go to but I am totally out of it and have no idea so call and tell them ahead of time you only want to go to an ER with an EEG available in the event that you might need to be taken to an ER by them sometime in the future. Also tell friends and family so they know also.
