Seizure changes

Wed, 06/17/2015 - 11:35
I've been having seizure for over 13 yrs. They came out of the blue in my mid 20's. They, started off as pseudo seizures. In the first several years I would have 5-7 a day, then gradually they calmed down. I was on every medication known to man, nothing worked except making me a zombie or weight gain.I've had routine eeg's and 72 hr. Video eeg's which all come back normal. The last 10 yrs I decided to go medication free. Which was a awesome idea bc they became infrequent. Once a year as opposed to several a week. Now the last 6 yrs.they have been once every 3 yrs. But when they come they, are, strong, different and new changes. The last 3 I've had in 6 yrs have been completely different. They last longer and are more severe. I had one at work 6 months ago, lost license etc. Went back to neurologist and she changed my diagnosis to epileptic with generalized tonic clonic seizures, now back on meds something I haven't taken before. Have to go back for eeg which always comes up normal, but I want my license back so I gotta do what I gotta do. Has anyone else had same problem with seizures changing? Hoping eeg is normal again.once every 3 years for seizure I think is pretty okay. Dr. Put me on keppra and I've read so many horror stories. I'm only on second day of taking it but I don't want to gain weight since I've lost 50 lbs already on my own it would be disheartening to gain weight again.

OK I read your post.As for pseudo seizures___ They are either seizures or nothing.I had 20-25 EEG's all came back normal. But I was still having seizures and yes different types of seizures. I kept taking meds and was fine for over 3 years. No seizures what so ever. But then I had a stronger seizure and I wanted to know what had happened since I had been seizure free for 3= years.  A persons threshold can be high enough to keep the seizures from happening. But the body changes hormones change the body and that could have been what happened. We raised the dosage a little and I was fine. I have gone months without a seizure but I still have them. The body does well withiout medications and like Doc said it has a threshold that can keep a seizure from starting. In your case that was keeping you from having them or only having a few. Yo will read a lot of stuff posted by people who took keppra and yes the side effects were bad. I have been in drug studies so I also know how those studies land on the information sheet. True there are some side effects that do last and the percentage for them are 5-8% with most side effects. A few side effects listed may have 8-12%..... What you will rarely see posted would come from the 92-95% of the people taking keppra that are having no problems using it. It has become the go to medication. It was designed to treat one type of seizure. The testing didn't stop it was then tested for other types of seizures as well as testing to see what other medications it can be coupled with.I also know keppra is the best medication I have ever used in the 50+ years I have been living and dealing with epilepsy. It not only reduced the number of seizures. It then reduced the time in those seizures. A seizure that used to last 5-10 minutes now lasts 5-8 seconds. The postictal time (get back to mormal) used to be 15-45 minutes (sometimes longer) is now also seconds. I can have one while discussing something with people and they would know nothing about the seizure. I hope this helps Joe
