Recent diagnosis

For many years I would have weird sensations to where I would feel "out of place". I could tell when they were starting as I would get strange sensations in my body. I could hear people talking to me, yet I really wasn't "with it" enough to respond to them. I couldn't remember what was said to me. Although I would see things that weren't really there, I couldn't remember what I would see/hear in my head or sometimes feel. In August of this year, I had a Grand Mal seizure. My daughter had slept in my bed that night and freaked out when I went into convulsions. I believe I have had them two times prior to this as I woke up in the AM and had bitten my lip and pulled the muscles in my left shoulder to the point that I could hardly move it for days. I was sent to a Neuro who put me on Lamictal. I was gradually put on 2 in the AM and 2 in the PM. I did well with that...until I pushed myself at work to hard. After a very long week, I had a day where I had those "weird" senasations over a dozen times within a 4 hour period. I was told that I had let the exhaustion get ahead of the meds and to go to bed and drink lots of fluids. The Neuro said they were complex partial seizures and he added Keppra in addition to the Lamictal. I took 250 miligrams twice a day for a week, then I was supposed to up it to a total of 1000 miligrams per day. Couldn't do it!!! Quit them cold turkey after a week. I would sleep 16 hours a day. Could barely stay awake to drive a 30 minute drive. Severely confused and a horrible memory loss. I feel like my Neuro was trying to kill me!!!!!!!!! Anyway, I am pretty new to this and just don't have people other than Docs to talk to about it :) By juliec at 12/25/2006 - 6:46pm | juliec's blog | Add New Comment

Hi Julie, Welcome to the site! I am sorry to hear that you don't have anyone else to talk to regarding the challenges you are facing with Epilepsy. I am a new member also, and am finding the site a great resource for making connections, getting encouragement, and picking peoples brains! I am dealing with my little boy having clusters of Tonic Clonic seizures over the past month. I wanted to respond to you to welcome you and also let you know that he too has been put on Lamictal. The dose of my son is eventually going to be two pills (25 mg each) in the morning and 2 pills in the evening. Right now my little one is on 1/2 a pill (12.5 mg)once in the AM and once in the PM. So far it has gone alright. I have noticed however, that the minute I deviate from giving him the pill on the exact hour of his schedule he seizes. I don't know if you Dr. says you have a "window" of overlap. Granted my son is still on a very low dose, but the minute we slipped up he had two seizure days with clustering in a row, and before that he was at 10 days apart. I hope that you connect with as many wonderful people as I have, it is neat to talk to people from all over the world that have experienced things similar to my family. It definitely makes the whole thing a lot less scary. I hope that things calm down for you. Keep me posted. Good Luck, Mama bear (Tresa)

Tresa. I would be surprised if your son's seizures were related to the taking of Lamictal (Lamotrigine) just a few minutes either side of a particular time of day. Lamictal has a half-life - the time it takes for the bloodstream serum level of a drug, after a single dose, to halve - of 30+ hours. I take 100mg of Lamictal twice a day, but I could probably reduce that to a single dose of 200mg, if it suited me (some do). Chris
