Possible epilepsy?

Wed, 07/02/2014 - 04:08

Hi everyone,

yesterday something happened to me. The evening before I had something to drink but it really wasn't that much. I'd say I was just slightly drunk, and feeling fine. Before going to bed someone told me some really bad things and it just made me feel awful. So, yesterday (the next day) I was feeling quite upset and depressed, but it was only after lunch that I "shut down":

At first I found it really really hard to say anything at all, tears would come out non-stop of my blank and fixed eyes. I found it really hard to move, until my body just wouldn't respond. I couldn't see properly and at some point I couldn't really see with my left eye (like it was all black and blurry) and would be seeing double with my right eye. At some point I just could neither move nor speak at all. I started having little uncontrolled movements (e.g. my right arm). When someone tried moving me I just fell on the floor. It took me some time but I eventually managed to move again. That's when I started moving and speaking "in slow motion". I still couldn't read or focus properly and I found it really hard to look at people in the eyes, just as it was hard focusing on a word or any other thing. I also had an increasing difficulty in breathing at some point.

What brought me here is that I had just another episode eight years ago. Some conditions were similar: I had something to drink and someone had hurt my feelings very badly (literally felt like a heartbreak) and experienced the same symptoms. The difference is that back then it escalated in a proper seizure and I was hospitalized. They were really unfriendly in hospital, accused me of being a junkie and so on though the blood test proved I hadn't taken anything and that the alcohol percentage was too low to cause such a thing (they  told me that after the seizure I spent seven hours in a coma and that I had been speaking nonsense just before). They didn't give me an explanation and didn't want to hear my version (so they missed out the whole "zoning out" episode etc.).

So: I'm a 25 year old, I have suffered a lot from depression in the past. I DO NOT do drugs, I seldom drink alcoholics but when I do they don't usually cause me any problems. What I'd like to know is: is this a form of epilepsy? Can the combination of depression/distress and alcohol help trigger this kind of episode?

As you might have guessed I only thought about epilepsy now because when I was 17 I experienced the very same thing before a proper seizure.

Sorry about possible poor language/terminology (I live in Italy and I'm unfamiliar with epilepsy).
Thank you very much for your time & help.

Welcomeescalated in a proper seizure psychiatrist and a psychologist deal with their issues and do not know all they need to about seizures. Now they may use medications that people with epilepsy use since both deal with issues in the brain. What you posted could have been seizures. After a seizure it does take time to get back to normal. In the first seizures I had that time was longer since I had not taken medications to help control the seizures. As for being in a coma and gibbering they should have been looking for answers as to why you were doing that. Now if a person is in a coma they are generally being checked out to find out what the reason was or why that happened. Can the combination of depression/distress and alcohol help trigger this kind of episode   escalated in a proper seizure and I was hospitalized I just could neither move nor speak at all    I started having little uncontrolled movements (e.g. my right arm   and several of the other things you posted could be in different types of seizures.I live in Italy and I'm unfamiliar with epilepsy What most people do not realize is that epilepsy is more common than Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and strokes combined? Yet, little is said or writen about it, as many endure those symptoms in secret for fear of stigma. As for spelling and other things MINE SUCKS BIG TIME so yu are forgiven I hope this helps and yo get the assistance you need Joe

Welcome to this siteOK I'll

Welcome to this siteOK I'll try this again since the post I sent is in moderation As for proper seizure which of the 40+ seizures is proper???  Most people think that a grand mal seizure is the only seizure a person can have. when in reality there are 40+ different seizures and you might have been having some throught your life and not knowing it. Absence seizures (peitie mal) are blips in time. I was being written up for day dreaming in class when those day dreams were seizures. You psoted several things that could land in different kinds of seizures. your arm moving by itsself. Youf vision your  not responding or being able to talk like normal. Several of your issues could have been post ictal since it takes time to get back to normal after having a seizure. As for your other specialists they night not have known the different types of seizures since they specialize in other issues from the brain.  You also posted about this same thing happening before and you were in a come. Well that is debatable generally when a person goes to a hospital the doctors are checking everything out and it they have a problem they want to know WHY.  There are generally 2 tezsts done to see if a person has epilepsy or the person has had 2 seizures that are alike. The tests would be an EEG and a MRI. The EEG shows the electrical output from your brain. If it shows abnormalities (seizure activity) they will know where in the brain that activity is comming from. The MRI is basically showing everything having to do with your brain. With that they can see anything in your brain that might be there. Things like a deformative growth, scared brain tissue caused years ago. Anything. The neurologist will take the information from the EEG and look closwely at th MRI and see if anything is different in that area. In mine they found scared brain tissue. which came from a hemmorage to the brain. That hemmorage came from a blow to the head. They also said it was between 6-8. They nailed it, SO I do know the reason why I have epilepsy. There are lots of tetst that come back normal. But the EEG's don't capture the brain waves that are deeper in the brain so they might not capture the abnormalities. OPPS hospitalized nothing showed up on the EEG. As for depressions and drinking> they can trigger seizures to some people. This site has a lot of information on seizures types of epilepsy syndroms and triggers and many other things. Just go to the LEARN section. STRESS is one of the triggers many people. Depressions addes to the stremm. As for stress I am not talking about stress from work since it can be left at work and picked up the next day. Everyday stress dealing with things happening in your home.the country, money issues and everything else you worry or wonder about. As for your language and tremanality yours has been very good. Especially since you are from another country. I have problems with people who are 32 and younger from here since they seem to think they cant get epilepsy.  They text more then actually talk so they don't know how to talk to the person setting next to them on the bus. I do hope this helps you andyou get the assistance you need. JOE Oh and please forgive any spelling errors. I have never been a good speller I had problems in english when they wanted me to divide sentances into different thhings. All I wanted to do was ues one.
