Noise sensitivity

Tue, 07/21/2015 - 21:29

My 17 year old daughter had a seizure event on April 1. We witnessed the first tonic-clonic (grand mal) seizure at home and then she had a second one in the ER about an hour later. We, along with her neurologist, suspect she may have had one prior to the first one we witnessed but we don't know for certain. All of her labs in the ER were clear...bloodwork, urinalysis, CT scan. She had an EEG about a week later which showed significant electrical activity in the brain that supports Epilepsy. Her neurologist is hestitant to diagnose her with Epilepsy though until/unless she has another seizure (which she thankfully has not) and we are fine with that as we hate to consider meds unneccasarily. We have noticed some changes in her since the seizures...short term memory loss, decreased ability to focus and retain information and sensitivity to light. In the past few weeks we have also noticed sensitivity to noise such as fireworks and thunder. Yesterday we went to our first rodeo where they shoot off a canon to signal the start of the rodeo. Her reaction to that canon blast was intense and scary...she jumped about a foot (honestly, we all did, lol) and she immediatey started crying and was shaking uncontrollably, practically hyperventilating. I have never seen her have a reaction like that to anything. Needless to say, we left the rodeo. My question is this...could the seizures have triggered some sort of senstivity to sound considering she wasn't that sensitive before? Could sound trigger a seizure?

I must say noise is a issue

I must say noise is a issue for me also the past few years, I thought I was going crazy had my ears tested everything. Until recently I discovered a wonderful neurologist and one day I boldly ask him if my ears can also be a trigger to my epilepsy (see I suffer from photosensitive epilepsy) and he explained to me the brain prepares itself for certain thigs. When you know you are going somewhere your brain prepairs itself for it, but when something unexpected pops up then it doesn't always knows what to do with that information and that's when you have a seizure.
