Newbie with Petit Mal/Absensence Seizures.

I did a google search looking for some advice and stumbled across this site, I love it and wish I found it long ago. I am a 34 year old female and I come from Ireland. I had my first Grand Mal seizure when I was about 12 or 13. I was off school sick and I was playing a game on the Commodore 64 and woke up about an hour later with the family Dr asking me if I knew who and where I was. I was taken to hospital but they didn't really do much. The second seizure I had was when I was 18 or 19 and I was in school. I was taken to hospital and was only there for a few hours and released. I hit my head when I fell but apart from a sore head and feeling dizzy I was fine. I have only ever had 2 GM seizures but I have suffered from Petit Mal since my first GM seizure but my Dr said I wasn't bad enough to be put on meds. I don't have a lot of Absence seizures but when I get them they mess my day up. I have noticed that my seizures increase if I have little sleep or if my sleep pattern changes, does anybody else have this problem? I can usually tell if I am going to have absence seizures (or as my family calls them blinkies) as I get what I can only describe as a feeling of light headedness (its very hard to describe the feeling). I know diet is a factor, for instance. I can't drink Pepsi but Coke is ok. Years ago when I lived in America I made the big mistake of eating Doritos sandwich cracker thingys and the next day was the worst day I ever had, I must have had 300-500 absence seizures because of the Doritos. I think additives do play a big roll in whether I have any blinkies or not. I never learned how to drive, I couldn't get behind the wheel of a car knowing that I could have even the smallest seizure and crash or hit somebody. I have read a few of the posts on here but if anybody could advise as to any natural supplements that might help me I would be so greatful. A few people mentioned fish oils, I am vegetarian but would be willing to take fish oils if it helped. I think that about sums me and my epilepsy up. Thanks for listening. Siobhan.

Welcome! Here's a link to info on complemetary or alternative treatment. You can also search for fish oil. Keeping open mind is key when learning about epilepsy. Ask lots of questions on all treatments, including things called 'natural'. Just because it has this term, doesn't mean there are no side effects. There's also a book out on complementary therapies in epilepsy- visit the shopping section on the site to take a look, edited by Dr. Devinsky, Schachter and Pasica.
