New to the site. possible TLE?

Thu, 09/04/2014 - 01:46

hi, im new to the site and i dont know much about epilepsy in general other than some things ive read online. anyways, i have a question about temporal lobe epilepsy that i hope you guys can answer for me. but first of all, a little bit about me and why i started researching epilepsy anyways; about 2 and a half years ago or so maybe longer, i had an intense "bad trip" on a drug in which i experienced things that were totally abnormal to what a normal high shouldve been like. then, about a month later after that i woke up one day feeling very unusual and started panicking and felt "not right". later that day i looked up my symptoms on google to come across a disorder called "depersonalization disorder" which is also comorbid along with "derealization", and ive had intense symptoms ever since and some of them even match up with TLE. now onto my question, just recently i saw a post on these forums where someone mentioned that one of their symptoms from the temporal lobe epilepsy is a sudden strong feeling that something bad is going to happen to one of their family members and that they sort of "see it happening but not really" at the same time. when i saw that it really caught my attention because i recently experienced something just like this where all of the sudden i expereinced a very itnense feeling of impending doom or that something bad was happening or going to happen to my mom or as if somethign was "hanging over my head" like clouding my life, like something terrible was invading my life. very very hard to explain but very very intense and real feeling. also, another thing that recently happened to me that really made me wonder about things is when i was drinking with a few friends at a park one night and i fell asleep on a park table/bench after about only 1 shot of vodka. then a couple minutes later out of nowhere i suddenly woke up withou even thinking first and was automatically panicking. i stood up and couldnt see quite right and i was stumbling around, was dizzy, and things seemed very unclear and distant and one of my friends even said that i seemed incoherent and considered even taking me to the hospital. does any of this sound like possible temporal lobe epilepsy? also one more thing i should note is that in around spring 2012 id say, i had an eeg which on the offical report/paper that i received in the mail, said that i had "seizure activity" in my left temporal lobe i believe. however, the doctors i talked to said that they didnt consider it to be epilepsy and that it was just a "normal variant". anyways, im done with this, sorry for the long post but please do tell me your thoughts. -thanks, tom

So have you recently talked

So have you recently talked to your doctor about these experiences? This needs follow up with a person who listens and is qualified to treat you (and make referrals). If you don't have a record of these events, start recording them. It also sounds like you need to avoid drugs and alcohol, they may lower any seizure threshold you have. Let people know how it goes.

i had an eeg which on the offical report/paper that i received in the mail, said that i had "seizure activity" in my left temporal lobe i believe. An EEG isi one of the primary tests down by a specialist in epilepsy. With most people all their EEG's come back normal. Any abnormality would also come back with where the activity is comming from. Abnormal activity is generally seizure activity That activity is what neurologists look at to make a diagnoosis. While I am not a doctor I do know what caused my epilepsy and I also know that all but 1 of the 30 or so EEG's I had taken were normal. The one with abnormalities showed the neurologists where to look closer at in th MRI of the 1960's (neuro-angeogram) Which a closer look since thier first look everything was normal they found scared brain tissue. If I were you I would be checking with my doctor to see if he could refer you to a neurologist who specialises in epilepsy. Take the EEG  and that info with you and tell the neurologist what the doctors said. If those doctors were in the ER then they do not know all that is needed to be known by specialists. In the last ER I went to I was given a ECG and it was normal. But they said nothing about my Afib or irregular heart beat. SO many people working in ER's know how to fix broken bones and things that most people have issues with. Very few ER's have neurologists specializing in epilepsy in them at all times of the day.

It means the possiablity is

It means the possiablity is there. EEG's are used for many things Epilepsy being one of them. ALZ is another if it has anything to do with the central nervious systey the use an EEG. Until nuerologists went into their specializting a neurologist worked on all things happening in the brain . I am not a doctor so I don't want you to take what I posted for fact. I am posting from what has happened to me and what I know about my case. If the information was sent in the mail that is fine. Was it the person who did the EEG the person that gave you the information at the hospital since generally that person only does the EEG and reads it. My neurologists have a person that does that but they also look at the EEG themselves. SO call hte hospital and find out if the neurologist read it and what he thinks. If there was no neurologist that specializes in epilepsy that looked at it then set up an appointment.Epilepsy is more common than Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and strokes combined? Yet, little is said or writen about it, as many endure those symptoms in secret for fear of stigma.
